Sony Targets PS JailBreak, PSFreedom and PSGroove PS3 Hacks

212w ago - Today garyopa at PSX-Scene.com (linked above) reports that Sony appears to be targeting the PS JailBreak, PSFreedom and PSGroove related PS3 hacks and has shared numerous court documents for those interested.

From one of the documents, to quote: "Similarly targeted document subpoenas or deposition notices to any other third party who SCEA learns may be involved in the distribution or sale of the PS Jailbreak software, known as, for example, PSGroove, OpenPSJailbreak, and PSFreedom, or who may have knowledge of the distribution or sale of this illicit software."

PS3 hacker Mathieulh is also mentioned in one of the documents as recently [Register or Login to view links] to be one of 20 individuals behind PSGroove, to quote: "Mathieu Hervais told BBC News he was one of about 20 hackers involved in PSGroove's development."

Just under a month ago Sony was granted an injunction by Australian Courts on the sale of PSJailBreak PS3 modchips, followed by blocking PS JailBreak and PS3 proxy...
 

NZHawk's Awesome MountPoint Manager v1.0 is Released

212w ago - Today NZHawk had released Awesome MountPoint Manager v1.0 (followed by a few revisions below) which, according to him, is pretty much like the existing backup manager, with one major difference- You can choose any folder on any device on you PS3 to use as the mounted disk.

What?
This Awsome MountPoint Manager is pretty much like the existing backup manager, with one major difference! You can choose any folder on any device on you PS3 to use as the mounted disk.

Why?
I wanted to mess around with the SDK that was 'avaliable' and it was a good learning curve! (Pretty much the first time ive coded in C++) and it was a challenge! (24 hours with no sleep)

How to Use?

1. Download and install my app
2. Browse to the location that you store your PS3...
 

Project: RichDevX PSGroove Payload for PS3 Service Mode

213w ago - Today French site PS3Gen.fr (linked above) reports news of a project RichDevX is working on where a PSGroove payload is utilized for examining PS3 Service Mode.

To quote, roughly translated: "RichDevX tells us about his progress with his playload to put the PlayStation 3 in service mode and recently released two snapshots of progress.

It is indeed working on a payload to get the console into service mode and be able to launch a file. Choke on every boot via a USB key and others.

As shown in this first image, we can see the red box on the XMB showing that the console actually went into service mode. In this mode, it is possible to run specific software, including one allowing the downgrade (the opposite of update, ie back to a previous firmware).

OtherOS who says so says downgrade option of going back 3.15 for benefit of OtherOS plus most of the hack with PSGroove.

Payload through this, it is also possible to run each time you start the console, loading a file. Self from a USB key as explained above. This could allow the hack using only one time a dongle or other, then your USB stick could complete the task alone. Advances in the underground world push the limits even further, watch this."

213w ago - Today PSGroove has shared details courtesy of [Register or Login to view links] on how to run PS3 games which contain 4+GB files from an external PlayStation 3 FAT32 HDD.

To quote: Due to FAT32 limitations users needed to run these games from internal hard drive only. However, it seems that isn't the only option anymore. Many games utilize a file format known as PSARC (*.psarc).

These files ending in .psarc are archive files similar to zip or rar files on PC. By extracting these large archive files and using the smaller files that are inside, users can get stay under the 4GB limit.

This method has been tested on Uncharted II, and will only work on games utilizing the psarc file format.

Video: PS3 JailBroken with a PlayStation 3 SixAxis Controller?

213w ago - Update: The PICGroove Mod PS3 SixAxis Guide is now available as promised for those interested in JailBreaking your PS3 with a PlayStation 3 SixAxis Controller!

Today hasuky at Spanish site Elotrolado.net (linked above) posted a video (below) of what appears to be a PS3 JailBroken using a PlayStation 3 SixAxis controller.

According to el_apren on IRC he plans to share a guide tomorrow on how it was done. When asked if the controller is usable afterwards he confirmed that it does indeed work normally on the PS3.
