3D Accelerated Graphics Are Coming to PS3 Linux

259w ago - The new Mesa 7.5 has been [Register or Login to view links] recently.

The interesting thing about it is that it is first release to contain [Register or Login to view links] architecture for "OS-independent and API-independent 3D drivers" which in turn contains drivers for various devices such as:

• softpipe - a software/reference driver
• i915 - Intel 915/945 driver
• Cell - IBM/Sony/Toshiba Cell processor driver
• nouveau (for NVIDIA GPUs) and R300 for (AMD/ATI R300)

You can read about state of Cell driver [Register or Login to view links].

This in fact will bring accelerated 3D graphics to PS3 where the graphics processing won't be done by RSX but by employing SPUs. This would vastly enhance usability of Linux running on PS3 by providing one of the things it's lacking now...

Project: OurOS Bootloader for PS3 Linux in Development

300°
261w ago - Similar to both the Petitboot Bootloader and pdaXrom-NG Bootloader for PS3 Linux, the OurOS project in development is a Linux-based user interface for the PS3.

To quote: It's goals are to provide an easy to install and easy to use graphical environment for the OtherOS platform.

Easy to install means a user will just have to install an otheros.bld file using the XMB and have a storage device available (USB storage device or OtherOS partitioned internal HDD).

Easy to use means no messing around with package managers or command lines, since we know what the hardware is we can forgo a lot of the usual linux setup tasks. And since we're only targeting certain applications we do not need the normal linux style package management system and can use something simple and self contained.

From a developers perspective OurOS will provide a consistent environment to target, and will also come with a ready to use toolchain.

The only download to date is a [Register or Login to view links], however,...

PS3 Trophy Scanner 1.0 for Linux Released!

550°
268w ago - Here's a little application I wrote, when I was bored. Basically it scans for PS3 game trophy related files like icons and the description files containing the missions to unlock a trophy and it's status (bronze, silver, gold, platinum).

The difference between the application and all the public websites which have trophy lists is, that it also will find trophies which are not released to the press people, yet. So you can be sure this will find trophies directly when they are online, even before the journalists get the info

Your chance to get a complete trophy list ;-)

You have to have curl installed by the way. It's in every Linux repositories so you simply can install it via the terminal. For example in debian distros you only need to open the terminal and enter sudo apt-get install curl to install it.

Recently Sony's own PS3 Dev Geoffrey Levand has been updating it (linked above) further, with today's build available below:

Installing Petitboot
1. Put your otheros.bld file on to a USB disk, in a file called /PS3/otheros/otheros.bld. Assuming your USB disk is mounted at /media/usbdisk:

[jk@pokey ~]$ mkdir -p /media/usbdisk/PS3/otheros
[jk@pokey ~]$ cp otheros.bld /media/usbdisk/PS3/otheros/

If you don't have a USB disk,...
