Nintendo Wii Goes From Fad to Fixture

50°
297w ago - According to Canwest News Service's Vito Pilieci, the Nintendo Wii is no longer a fad. He notes that the Wii is now firmly established as a pop culture fixture.

He even draws a comparison to the iPod and says while the iPod changed the way people listen to music, the Wii changed the way people view family gaming.

To quote: When the Nintendo's Wii debuted in late 2006, video game industry executives and observers scoffed, calling it a fad that would quickly pass.

Three Christmases later, it's clear just how wrong they were. The Wii is, if anything, firmly established as a pop-culture fixture.

For the third holiday season straight, the Wii remains the leading choice for toy givers. Crossing so many demographic segments - beyond the narrow stereotype of young, gaming males - the Wii's been embraced globally in a way the world hasn't seen since Apple Inc. introduced the iPod in 2001.

It is like the iPod... I have one and I don't have a huge interest in gaming, being an older guy, said Dale Bradley, 44, associate professor in the department of communications, popular culture and film at Brock University. f you talk to someone who has a Wii, it always comes out that Grandma and little Billy were playing bowling. It's not the weirdo device that sits down the basement...

Video: inFamous for PlayStation 3 Goes Hands-On with IGN

50°
297w ago - Today Nate Fox from Sucker Punch Productions shared a PS Blog follow-up from the hints yesterday as well as the fan footage from earlier today.

To quote: Hey there, Internet people, Nate Fox here from Sucker Punch Productions. For those of you who may not recognize the name, we're the guys who made the Sly Cooper games. I have the pleasure of being Game Director on our new title inFamous.

inFamous is an open world, superhero adventure where you (the player) get to experience first hand what it's like to suddenly acquire superpowers.

We've been working hard to get the game ready to finally show off and now that day has arrived! Well, actually it arrived early this week when a couple guys from IGN showed up for inFamous' first hands-on demo.

It was fun to watch the journalist as he climbed to the top of a building, spotted a thug...

Kojima Goes In-Depth on Metal Gear Solid Touch for iPhone

50°
297w ago - Metal Gear Solid Touch has likely caused a lot of heads to be scratched across the game industry today - a full on MGS game on a fledgling platform that features a couple decent titles and approximately eight squillion one-shot gimmicks?

Don't tell that to MGS director Hideo Kojima. Along with MGS Touch creative producer Yasuyo Watanabe, the man sees great opportunity in the tiny device - in fact, when the game is released next spring, he hopes it opens up an entirely new userbase for his games.

Here are a few choice excerpts from the interview with Kojima and Watanabe published in Famitsu magazine this week:

This is Watanabe's first "real" game. Up to now, she was Kojima Productions' chief Web designer, working on a variety of Flash stuff for the site.

Kojima: She almost never give me any lame ideas during presentations; she has a good sense for that sort of thing. Around the time I noticed that, the iPhone was released and started to become a major movement. I'm a huge fan of the iPod and Apple products in general, so if they're putting out a game platform, then naturally I want to compete on it - and I thought that her design sense would work perfectly on the iPhone.

The game, a shooter set in the world of Metal Gear Solid 4, is controlled entirely...
