Designing a Future Classic
The accepted classification of weapon types in most present-day military services runs the gamut from pistol, through submachine gun, assault rifle and sniper rifle, to support weapons like the machine gun. But there's an older, lesser-known weapon type that sits between the assault rifle and the sniper rifle. Known as the battle rifle, this saber-toothed forebear of the common assault rifle is much larger, and fires heavier bullets with a bigger charge.

In Killzone 2, the role of the battle rifle was assigned to the StA-14. Intended as a forerunner to other 'Stahl Arms' weapons in the franchise - notably the StA-52 LAR and the brand-new...

Yakuza 3 Discussed in Famitsu; Seamless Battle Transitions

50°
311w ago - Famitsu has some details in Yakuza 3, which is set to take off from where part 2 ended. This sequel includes a free camera which allows you to control your viewpoint, improved AI for town residents and thankfully a reduction in load time. Apparently, the transition from encounter to battle is now seamless.

To quote: Nagoshi told the magazine that the new title begins immediately after the events of part 2, as in right after that game's last scene. Kiryu and Haruka decide to head down to Okinawa, where they expect to find a peaceful life.

As previously announced, Yakuza 3 will alternate between Okinawa and the original's Tokyo-based location. There will be some similarities between the two locations, including the use of signs and shops from real world brands. Yakuza 3 has the highest number of tie-ups so far for the series, explained Nagoshi.

Yakuza veterans will see some improvements to the game's environments, outside of the obvious up in visual quality. The night life will be more realistic than ever, with large groups of people walking through the streets and even taxis racing from location to location.

You'll get to enjoy this more advanced night life with a more advanced camera system. Yakuza 3 includes a free camera, allowing you to control your viewpoint.

Nvidia does battle with Intel, Moore's Law

50°
332w ago - Nvidia CEO and co-founder Jen-Hsun Huang's jeremiad against Intel heralds future melees with the chip giant over computer graphics technology. Behind the sound and fury lurks Moore's Law.

Most observers agree that the graphics processing unit (GPU) is gaining on the central processing unit (CPU) as the single most important piece of silicon inside the PC. "When you start looking at a PC today, the (central) processor means less and less," according to Jim McGregor, an analyst at In-Stat. The GPU is simply becoming a better way for PC makers to differentiate in a landscape dominated by Intel CPUs, he said.

The question is, who is going to be the largest provider of that differentiation and what form will it take? The pressure on Nvidia--expressed by Huang on Thursday at an analyst meeting--is understandable, as the company seeks to fend off both Intel and AMD, who are increasingly focused on graphics, said McGregor. "Nvidia faces serious challenges. One of their big customers (AMD) went out and acquired a competitor (ATI) and then (you have) Intel saying we're going into your territory." That has put Nvidia on edge. Intel, not surprisingly, is the biggest threat.

"Intel is going to be as competitive as they can possibly be," said Dean McCarron, founder and principal of Mercury Research. "There...
