iPhone Developer Quits Day Job After 'iShoot' Hits Number One

50°
305w ago - Developer Ethan Nicholas at Sun Microsystems has handed in his two weeks notice after finding success with an iPhone game.

His game iShoot Lite went live on January 3, 2009 and less than ten days later, it was the top app on the iTunes App Store with a massive 16,792 downloads in one day!

To quote: "iShoot Lite" went live on January 3, 2009. Less than ten days later on January 11, the original iShoot rocketed out of obscurity as the number one Top Paid App in the iTunes App Store with 16,972 downloads in one day.

It virtually blasted the reigning number one iFart app off its perch overnight. iShoot simultaneously grabbed the Top Free App number one spot as well.

For an app to reach number one and remain there, some 10,000 plus downloads per day are required. That's roughly $21,000 a day for this $2.99 app after Apple takes its 30-percent stake.

Nicholas attributes iShoot's meteoric rise to the release of his 'Lite' version, giving millions a free chance to experience the thrill of launching tank artillery. It's important to note that a $2.99 price point was no barrier to the ultimate success of iShoot.

"I'm still in shock," Nicholas said, "I've given my two week notice at Sun Microsystems. I'm gonna do this full time now."

Former IBM Architect: PS3 and XBox 360 Power is Fairly Equal

50°
305w ago - Former IBM technical architect David Shippy, who worked on both the PS3's Cell-specific PPU chip and XBox 360's Xenon CPU has discussed the power of each system.

He couldn't give a definite answer on which system was powerful and laughed it all depends. The conclusion that he come to was that overall they are fairly equal even though they use different processing models.

To quote: But [Register or Login to view links] also asked him about the relative power of the two systems - since he worked so intimately on them, does he have an opinion on which was the more powerful?

"I'm going to have to answer with an 'it depends,'" laughs Shippy, after a pause.

"Again, they're completely different models. So in the PS3, you've got this Cell chip which has massive parallel processing power, the PowerPC core, multiple SPU cores... it's got a GPU that is, in the model here, processing more in the Cell chip and less in the GPU. So that's one processing paradigm - a heterogeneous paradigm."

"With the Xbox 360, you've got more of a traditional multi-core system, and you've got three PowerPC cores, each of them having dual threads - so you've got six threads running there, at least in the CPU.

306w ago - Today gourangaman656 let us know of a PlayStation 3 Development Kit DECR-1000 A (TOOL) that has hit eBay [Register or Login to view links]!

The seller is haly20, and at the time of this writing the current bid is only US $1,125.00.

Needless to say, if the auction doesn't get pulled over the next 10 days the price is likely to exceed $10,000.00 but still quite interesting as they are extremely rare to find!

What is so good about a PS3 TOOL over a PS3 Debug/Test console? Among other things, this unit can dump/debug the PS3 Hypervisor and Kernel... meaning PS3 Devs and hackers would LOVE to get their hands on one!

To quote: This auction is for a PlayStation 3 Development Kit, MSRP $10,250. It has been opened for photographing and that is all. BRAND NEW IN BOX. The console is sold as-is, with all accessories and manuals in English.

The system appears to have two slots for HDD's with HDD's already inserted, along with a Blu-ray slot. All photos are original and if the part you are looking for is not in the description, it is not included.

I will ship in the box that it came in. This thing is incredibly heavy shipping is as you see on the calculator. If you have any questions, feel free to...
