Reeves: Sometimes it's an Advantage to be Last in Europe

200°
313w ago - European folks: You know the deal, enduring the agonizing wait for a new game release to be localized in a dozen or so languages for PAL territories can be frustrating at times. Or so it seems. Outspoken Sony Computer Entertainment Europe head David Reeves believes the wait is a clear advantage for Europe at times:

To quote: People say, 'Well, why do we always get things last? Why can't we say things?' Well, I've said this many times before: sometimes it's an advantage to be last in Europe, you know, when everything's ironed out.

"This time, we do have things to say in the European [market]. We have the music service, and we're doing great things on SingStar and there's more to come. These are global announcements.

"They recognize that the [Games Convention] in Europe, whether it's in Leipzig, Cologne or London: we can do the announcements wherever. So they said to us in Tokyo, 'Do you want to do it here?' And we said, 'Yeah, we'd love to do it here.

Is the assurance of a bug-free title worth waiting up to six months? Half the time there are no differences and not to mention, those living in Europe sometimes have to wait longer for the same game patches that are released in North America and Japan. All in all, not a very significant advantage.

Tesco: Retailers who stick with PS2 for Christmas reap the benefits

200°
314w ago - Many UK retailers believe that there is still plenty of life in the PS2 just yet. Matthew Cushway of Tesco believes that people forget that many families are opting to stick with the PS2 due to difficult times within the current economy and those retailers who stick with the system will reap the benefits this year.

To quote: "PlayStation 2 still has a key part to play in the gaming market this year . It seems some people forget that for a large number of young families the outlay for a new console is a major decision and is simply not an option in the current economy.

"With the PlayStation 2 install base I believe that many younger-skewed games will again perform very well this year. Retailers who stick with the PS2 format for Christmas this year will reap the benefits."

LGC: Need For Speed goes "back to its roots"

250°
314w ago - EA has released the first proper details on Need for Speed: Undercover, which'll no doubt sit somewhere near the top of this Christmas's sales chart.

After the disappointing Pro Street, Undercover takes the NFS series "back to its roots" says EA, with high-speed pursuits with rivals while dodging the old blues 'n twos to take down an International crime syndicate. All whilst undercover, obviously.

There's 80 miles of road to explore in the open-world Tri-City Bay area, says EA, and a totally new AI mechanic which delivers "aggressive and intelligent cops whose sole purpose is to take down the player quickly and by any means necessary."

The new game also introduces an all-new 'Heroic Driving Engine', a unique technology that generates "incredible high-performance moves at 180 miles per hour". We've no idea what this means.

Of course you can also expect tons of car customization, vehicle damage and licensed motors such as the Audi R8, BMW M6 and Lexus IS-F.

It's out in North America on November 18 and in Europe on November 21.

Microsoft admits spying on Web users

50°
314w ago - Software king of the world Microsoft has defended its ad-targeting practices, claiming that it is a lot more responsible than others.

In a document for a House committee Microsoft has more or less admitted collecting data on its web users. Redmond said that it began collecting data outside its own Web sites in 2006, when it launched a third-party ad network, and that activity accelerated after the acquisition of aQuantive in 2007.

Microsoft said that while it started by offering an "opt-out" option on all pages on which it serves ads starting in the Spring. Users were falling over themselves to sign up to give their data to Microsoft. Only 1,800 users had said no.

Although apparently finding the opt-out option on Microsoft's page is just as easy as hunting the Snark or finding the Holy Grail.

Microsoft says it's getting caned in the online ad business and the committee should look at Yahoo and Google if they want to see who the bad guys are.
