Video: PS3 QA Flag Demo, Enables Hidden Firmware Options

1300°
171w ago - Today Sony PlayStation 3 hacker Mathieulh has posted a video demo showcasing the PS3 QA flag, which is the internal console flag used by Sony to enable hidden Firmware options and removes restrictions on Retail and Debug consoles.

This is done on official PS3 Retail/Debug firmware without any modification as the console itself is QA flagged (QA token is set through spu_token_processor), meaning the method will not work on unflagged consoles and using the advanced QA flag also enables PS3 Firmware downgrading.

From the video's caption: I just QA flagged my Metal Gear Solid 4 Limited Edition console and I thought I'd show you the hidden options for the sake of it (and because I was bored).

I am sorry for the unstable camera, I only have two hands and the options are hidden and require (along with the actual flag) a crazy button combo to pop up. (I kid you not)

Sorry I am not telling you how to do this, please do not ask. Yes, this video is real.

QA flag is the internal console flag used by Sony, it enables hidden options and removes restrictions for both retail and debug consoles alike. It is used for QA centers and the R&D Department, there are 2 levels of QA flags, Minimum and Advanced, this console has been set to the Advanced one.

178w ago - Today giantpune has released a PSL1GHT-compatible LibPS3GUI library for PlayStation 3 developers, which includes a Connect 4 PS3 homebrew demo.

To quote: This is a little demo for libps3gui by me. It is basically a port of libwiigui by tantric to work with psl1ght. To compile it, you need psl1ght, tiny3d, libfreetype, libvorbis, libmpg123, libaudioplayer, and libogg (this is made to work with the current versions as of 3/19/2011, but hopefully wont be broken by future versions). The connect4 engine was written by Keith Pomakis.

It is intended to be used with the cursor (press L3 and use the left analog stick to move around), but it should be mostly functional just using the d-pad.

As with libwiigui, it is licensed under GPLv2.

Crytek Talks Crysis 2 PS3, PS3 Multiplayer Demo is Now Available

350°
179w ago - Sony's Social Media Manager Jeff Rubenstein has shared a Crysis 2 PlayStation 3 interview today with Crytek alongside news of a new PS3 multiplayer demo's arrival.

To quote: Console gamers didn't get the chance to experience the first Crysis, a shooter known for making PC gamers feel self-conscious about the power of their graphics cards. PlayStation 3 owners won't be left out of the follow-up, as Crysis 2 arrives on PS3 next week.

Recently I spoke with Executive Producer Nathan Camarillo about those trademark [Register or Login to view links] visuals, and about the new multiplayer demo, which just hit PSN last night.

PlayStation Blog: We know Crytek can produce on the PC. How do you utilize the PS3 to live up to the high PC standard?

Nathan Camarillo: It's the core of CryEngine 3 that's able to scale appropriately and we can adjust per platform exactly what we wanna get out of it. We want the exact same gameplay experience, the same fun, the same intensity, all the same visual information that you need to understand and play the game appropriately. It's just a lot of under the hood magic.

PSB: [Register or Login to view links] said Crysis 2 didn't look very good on...

Mortal Kombat PS3 Demo 3D Hands-On, Hits PSN Next Week

350°
181w ago - Sony's Senior Social Media Specialist Sid Shuman has shared some hands-on details about the new Mortal Kombat PS3 demo 3D that hits the US PSN next Tuesday and EU PlayStation Network next Wednesday.

To quote: I have played the Mortal Kombat PSN demo in 3D, and it is good. Comprised of four characters and two stages, the demo is a meaty preview of what to expect when the full game hits PS3 on April 19th (April 21st in the EU).

PlayStation Plus subscribers are getting early access this coming Tuesday, March 8th (March 9th in the EU) and it'll be delivered directly to your PS3 as long as you enable Automatic Downloads in your XMB settings. All other PSN users will be able to download the demo on Tuesday, March 15th.

The demo comes with four playable fighters: Johnny Cage, Mileena, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero. Fan-favorite Scorpion is nastier than ever, packing his trademark throwing spear ("Get over here!") and a wicked new sword, while rival ninja Sub-Zero forges weapons from ice and shatters internal organs with a touch.

Hollywood prima donna Johnny Cage hits below the belt, and sai-wielding mutant assassin Mileena makes no effort to hide her gleaming five-inch fangs. You'll also get two environments: The Living Forest and The Pit, complete with its gruesome stage fatality.
