Volition, Sony, Sierra in GTA panic

50°
321w ago - THQ has confirmed that Saints Row 2 has been pushed back from August 26 to October 14. According to Reuters, 'a senior THQ executive' has stated that this delay is 'due to product quality and marketing considerations.'

Vivendi (soon to be a part of Activision Blizzard) has delayed PROTOTYPE until 2009. And now word has leaked out that Sony has cancelled The Getaway for the PS3.

What do these three stories have in common? Panic. Game company executives around the world have witnessed the success of Grand Theft Auto IV and have wet themselves in terror. Figuratively. As far as we know.

The thing is, they may have acted too soon. For all of GTA IV's stellar sales and ground-breaking gameplay, consumer interest in the game has plummeted. Presumably, once the single-player game is completed, there is little left to hold their attention. Its position at the top of the online charts has slipped, too, with Halo 3 and CoD 4 reclaiming their rightful places.

However fiery the public interest, GTA IV Fever was never going to last forever. People will certainly crave new novelties by the end of winter, and nothing is more novel than a new open world violence sim to explore.

Barring any surprise announcements (GTA on the Wii, anyone?), this spring will be in the clutches...

Outrage over GTA IV problems

250°
321w ago - A significant number of members of Xbox.com are reporting issues with GTA IV including freezing and the 'Red Ring of Death' and are outraged that Microsoft and Rockstar have yet to comment on the situation.

To quote: "If you guys actually read and check Rockstar's official GTA IV forums, you'll find out that they are aware of the freezing problems for PS3 and 360. Their current workaround is: "Delete your saved game, and start over."" said one member.

Further investigation by another member lead to this:

"As it stands, there's no fix. But we did some research and believe we have the answer as to why this is happening.

Rockstar, in their very finite wisdom designed the game to have no loading times. That's great, except for the fact that GTA IV now overloads the cache and causes a lock-up (freeze). So now, instead of saving load times and providing a seamless experience, Rockstar has forced some machines to crash while attempting to load from the cache.

The solution: Rockstar needs to release a patch that limits the strain on the RAM right out of the gate. Can they even do this? Who knows? They haven't managed to make a game that doesn't freeze in two years. Unless you count the mega epic "Table Tennis"."

Court rejects Appeal over Deaths on Sam Donaldson's NM Ranch

50°
323w ago - A state court has rejected a move to reinstate a lawsuit against makers of a video game played by a teenager who killed three of his family members in 2004.

The killings occurred on newsman Sam Donaldson's ranch in southern New Mexico.

The lawsuit had alleged that the video game "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" contributed to the killings because Cody Posey played the game "obsessively" and it trained him to act out the violence when he shot and killed his father, stepmother and stepsister in July 2004. He was 14 at the time of the killings.

Posey's father worked as foreman on Donaldson's ranch.

The lawsuit contended that Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. and its subsidiary, Rockstar Games, and Sony Corporation of America should have foreseen that the game "would spawn such copycat violence." Sony produced the PlayStation 2 on which Posey played the video game.

The lawsuit was filed by Verlin Posey, brother of Paul Posey, the teen's father; and Pat and Leona Basham of Elephant Butte, parents of Tryone Posey, the teen's stepmother, and grandparents of Marilea Schmid, the teen's stepsister.

The teenager was convicted in 2006 and sentenced as a juvenile to remain in state custody until he is 21.

Jurors convicted Posey of first-degree...

EGM Rumors: GTA Massively Multiplayer Game; Bioshock for PS3!

100°
324w ago - When a new issue of EGM drops, most of the time we tend to scroll right to the rumors and look for the newest bit of gossip. This issue in particular has some very interesting tid-bits.

First, EGM is reporting what we've been speculating for a very long time now: Bioshock is heading to the PlayStation 3 in September, and will come complete with all of the game's downloadable content, as well as improved visuals. This is a topic we've been talking about since before the game launched on the Xbox 360 last year.

We've long believed the game to exist somewhere within Irational Games (now 2K Austin), seeing as how development of Bioshock began for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, as indicated by an early press release for the game. Now we have to wait and hope that EGM, or their sources are right about this.

Another notable rumor is that the Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 bundle is going to be extremely limited, so if you don't secure yourself a pre-order sometime soon, you may very well be out of luck. So if you've yet to grab yourself a PlayStation 3, why not pre-order the year's best damn bundle before they're all gone?

And please don't pre-order these with the intention of re-selling them on eBay or something, if the bundles end up becoming a rarity and being worth something, it won't...
