Sony shines Blu-ray on PS3 sales campaign

50°
357w ago - Sony is to step up its marketing campaign for the PlayStation 3 and emphasise that the games console is a Blu-ray disc player.

The move is aimed at boosting both the PS3 and the Sony-backed DVD format ahead of the holiday season.

Kaz Hirai, president of the games unit, told the Financial Times it was working closely with Sony Pictures and Sony Entertainment to "get the Blu-ray message out". It was a delicate "balancing act" for Sony Computer Entertainment,

"The PS3 is first and foremost a video games machine but we want to say - by the way, it's a great Blu-ray player as well," Mr Hirai said. Marketing efforts in the US, Europe and Japan would highlight the PS3 as a Blu-ray disc player as well.

Sony yesterday disappointed analysts by failing to cut the PS3's price, but Mr Hirai did not rule out a future price cut. "Going aggressive only on price without being able to back it up with content doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me," he said. A price cut would have a "real impact" on sales only if there were enough software titles to support the PS3.

But analysts were sceptical and said Sony could miss its shipment targets for the year. "Without a price cut close to Christmas, reaching 11m shipments is going to be very tough," said DavidGibson, analyst at Macquarie in...

Foxconn To Manufacture Playstation 3

50°
357w ago - Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., better known as Foxconn will join ASUSTeK in producing Playstation 3 units for Sony who has set a shipment goal of 10 million PS3 consoles for the first quarter of 2008.

Since Sony launched PS3 consoles in the fourth quarter of last year, ASUSTeK has been Sony's sole supplier of the products. Playstation 3's high price caused ASUSTeK's profits to fall to NT$136.7 billion for the second quarter from NT$222.5 billion posted in the first quarter.

Foxconn manufactures Xbox 360 components for Microsoft and Wii parts for Nintendo. Foxconn already are manufacturing Playstation 2 for Sony. Analysts believe that Sony has reached out for Foxconn in order to reduce Playstation 3 cost and - consequently - price.

Square Enix: Future of PS3 Could be Tough

359w ago - Boss of Square Enix tells Sony to sort its marketing strategies out.

Is it a super computer? Is it a Blu-ray player? No, it's a videogames console! PlayStation 3's schizophrenic marketing has come under scrutiny and the boss of Square Enix reckons Sony needs to sort it out.

According to Reuters, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada told a gathering of reporters in Tokyo that the future of PS3 "would be tough if its marketing strategy is not straightened up".

His concern originated from what he sees as an inconsistent marketing strategy for the console. He said: "Sony first unveiled the PS3 as a mighty home electronics product. Then, after some badgering from game companies, it shifted the position of the console closer to a game machine." Bets are now being taken as to what the PS3 will be marketed as next...

Network issues with 1.92? Sony is aware and trying to fix it

50°
359w ago - We've received many, many complaints from PlayStation 3 owners who are complaining that after upgrading to firmware 1.92, they've been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network, the Store, or the Warhawk servers. The problem seems to happen immediately after the upgrade, but for some people (PS3 Fanboy writers included) the issue will crop up randomly days later.

We contacted Patrick Seybold, Sony's Senior PR manager, about the ongoing network issues and he confirmed that Sony is indeed aware of it and are actively working on a fix. When he gets more details, he said he'd pass it on to us and of course we'll let you know as soon as we hear anything.

It's frustrating when a minor firmware patch breaks something major, but it's good to know that Sony is actively researching methods to ease our pain. Put down your pitchforks and torches folks, hopefully we'll all be playing Warhawk again soon.
