Sony secures exclusive for Grand Theft Auto 7

50°
368w ago - According to the November 2007 issue # 76 of the Official Xbox Magazine Sony has secured the next Grand Theft Auto, which would be number 7 in the series, to be a true exclusive to the Playstation 3.

"Rockstar really wanted to make a game that you can truly only do on PS3, harnessing the power of the Cell and Blu-ray disc and this deal lets them do just that" as said by Sony's Michael Shorrock in a statement to the press. " We handed Rockstar a signed blank check because we were short sighted enough to let Grand Theft Auto's exclusivity get away from us. Oops!"

Looks like the Xbox fans may be out of luck when it come to the next installment of Grand Theft Auto. If they do release a 360 version it sounds like it would have to be on multiple dvd discs if the game truly takes advantage of Blu-ray.

One thing is for sure. This will be interesting to watch play out. Stay tuned!

Rumor Crusher: Grand Theft Auto IV Out This Month

50°
368w ago - A few folks have been getting a bit... how shall we say this? "overexcited" about Grand Theft Auto IV. The latest rumour to do the rounds is that Rockstar's massively anticipated sandbox shooter will be out this very month. SPOnG can confirm that alas, this is not the case.

The rumor originates from Sony's UK PlayStation site, which bears the release date "October 2007" for the game. Needless to say, when SPOnG saw it we smelled a big, fat, hairy, bloated rat. The game has, after all, been very publicly pushed back from its original release date of Autumn this year.

We decided to put in a call to Rockstar on the off chance some development miracle has happened and were told, in no uncertain terms, "It's coming out in Spring next year." Sony's site, then, bears either old information or a straightforward admin error. While you wait for next year to roll around, sate your GTA appetite with a preview here.

Sony's $399 PS3 confirmed by Best Buy?

50°
368w ago - Thanks to a helpful tipster, we have a couple of Best Buy documents showing a $399 Playstation 3 with 40GB disk and Spiderman 3 (yes, Blu-ray) bundle with an "In Stock Date" of October 28. However, the more important "Street Date" field is unfortunately empty at the moment.

While the docs look legit and don't seem to be Photoshopped, they can still be faked easily enough. So we did a quick lookup on the UPC code and sure enough, while the details are masked, the manufacturer is listed as "Sony Computer Entertainment of America." Unfortunately, we don't see the new model CECHG01 listed anywhere in the docs. As such, let's be clear: this ain't official. Still, we'll be paying close attention on October 12th as will you we suspect.

Japan May Orbit Around LittleBigPlanet

50°
368w ago - Analyst Michael Pachter thinks LittleBigPlanet could ignite PlayStation 3 hardware sales in Japan.
In a note to investors Monday, Wedbush Morgan analyst Pachter said he was particularly impressed with consumer reaction to Sony's LittleBigPlanet, Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4 and Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed at the recent Tokyo Game Show.

"Each game appears to be well positioned to resonate with the Japanese audience," he said of the three titles. He added, "...We think that LittleBigPlanet will be a console seller in Japan."

The PS3 is currently lagging behind the Nintendo Wii in Japan. A new report from Famitsu publisher Enterbrain said that the less expensive Wii outsold the PS3 by more than four to one in Japan during the first fiscal half ending in September. Microsoft's Xbox 360 is performing well behind both consoles in the region.

LittleBigPlanet for PlayStation 3 is under development by UK-based Media Molecule, which was founded in 2006 by former Lionhead designer and Rag Doll Kung Fu developer Mark Healy. The game incorporates a charming yet technically impressive style, backed up with emergent gameplay and concepts taken from user-centric websites such as YouTube and MySpace.

The game is expected to release in early 2008 in the US.
