Sony Announces First Profit Loss in 14 Years Today

100°
272w ago - Sony today (5/14/09) announced that amid a drop in sales has had a loss of 98.9bn yen ($1.04bn; £685m) at the end of March compared to it's profit of 369.4bn yen last year.

Sony blames the currently strong yen and global economic downturn for the loss of profit this year. Sony had cut around 8,000 jobs and closed 10% of it's factories earlier this year in an attempt to slow the loss in revenue.

This current loss in profit is not unexpected though it is better than what Sony had originally predicted in January, which they said would be a loss of 150bn yen.

Sony's stocks closed today down 6.8% at 2,400 yen ahead of the results.

Sony is predicting a net loss for the current financial year of 120bn yen and as a result will continue to cut jobs and close factories. Analyst say that the only way for Sony to truly recover from this downturn would be to create a popular electronic as they currently have "no number one product" with the PS3 only being number one in Japan and slowly growing in several other countries.

However experts are agreeing that is currently a small blip and does not reflect a loss in popularity in the Nintendo Wii console due to the increase in profit that Nintendo announced earlier in the month. Time can only tell if this giant will recover or fall...

NIS Announces Last Rebellion Exclusively for PlayStation 3

50°
273w ago - It appears Trinity Universe isn't the only RPG on the way from Nippon Ichi Software.

NIS America also revealed at their press event that the long-rumored RPG, Last Rebellion, will be coming exclusively to the PlayStation 3.

The game is in development at Hitmaker, the same guys behind the Crazy Taxi games.

Players can roam around the world field and make action movements like in an action game, but once you enter battle, you engage the enemy using a turn-based system. The game features the ability to target different body parts on an enemy to weaken that area (such as hitting their legs to slow them down).

The game revolves around the characters Nine and Aisha. Nine is a Blade, whose specialty is physical attacks, and Aisha is a Sealer, who uses magic spells to attack & seal enemies. Players will be able to switch between the two in battle, strategically choosing which attacks to unleash first.

Last Rebellion is due to release in Fall 2009.

Activision Announces Guitar Hero 5, Band Hero & DJ Hero for Fall

200°
273w ago - Activision continues in updating its Guitar Hero franchise this year with three new full titles coming this autumn, as follows:

The newly announced Guitar Hero 5 will offer "the ability to drop in and out of songs and change band members, instruments and difficulty levels on the fly."

The press release contains no other details regarding the game, but you can bet it'll be pretty similar to Guitar Hero: World Tour.

Band Hero is the second of Activision's Hero trifecta for this fall. Don't be confused, Band Hero is completely separate from Guitar Hero. Except it's very similar - it's Activision's attempt at a family-oriented Guitar Hero game, rated E10+, and will be facing off against Harmonix's Lego Rock Band later this year.

Finally, DJ Hero is something we've been hearing a lot of murmurs about for a while. It will feature "diverse music genres including hip-hop, R&B, Motown, electronica and dance" and will include the turntable controller, images of which we posted earlier.

Apparently the title "transforms players into DJs who rule the club scene by creating original mixes of popular songs and music from the world's most exciting artists and DJs."

Sony Announces Vidzone Service for the PlayStation 3 Console

400°
273w ago - As part of Sony's Pause event in Sydney, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia announced a new service coming exclusively to the PlayStation 3 - Vidzone.

The new service is an optional download that places a new icon on the cross-media bar (XMB), allowing access to a massive number of music videos on demand.

VidZone will also be bringing live concert videos, as well as behind the scenes, interviews and making of footage, to your TV when it launches on PS3.

To quote: According to Michael Ephraim, Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment Australia, the service is aiming for a June launch, possibly to coincide with E3 - though this is subject to change.

The service itself, which is listed under 'music' on the XMB as a small TV set with a 'Z' in it, is free to all PS3 owners who choose to install the application. However, revenue appears to be generated from ad placement within the browser window.

While in the Vidzone, you can search for artists, by track, genre or album and you can save playlists. The menu is a simple up/down scroll through letters, rather than the pop-up menu generally used.

The selected video can be maximized with a tap of select, instantly filling the screen with sharp, streaming video content. You can also pause, fast-forward...
