295w ago - So, we got the new PS Store today... in short, it's lovely. From the little 'plinky' piano sound when it opens, to the nice fading page animations - it's a joy to navigate.
However, while navigating is a joy, Sony Europe have made their usual hash of things - their categorization completely sucks.
On the UK store the main categories are:
'other' media (what?!)
This is just crazy... so if you're looking for a demo, you need to either go to latest, or if it's not there, look in all games - which are sorted into sub groups by genre, not title. Also, all PSOne games are mixed in with the genres... so if you want a PSone game you need to find it in the melange of other titles... is Sony Europe bonkers?
On the USA store:
View All by Title
Themes and Wallpapers
These categories make perfect sense - you can find the same piece of content multiple ways, and if you go to 'downloadable games' the titles are split by platform (PS3, PSP, PS Eye, PSone Classics) and other sorting (top downloads, genre, alphabetical)......
297w ago - SCEE refused to be drawn on details of Firmware 2.30 this morning, following yesterday's confirmation that the PS3 software update would be needed to use the new version of PlayStation Store, to be released in mid-April in both the US and Europe.
To quote: We have made no official announcement of the details of Firmware 2.30 or exactly how the new Store will be deployed, a rep stated.
If the information released yesterday was correct, there should be a full Firmware release in the next two weeks, straight off the back of 2.20, which added BD-Live functionality only last week. Time will tell for sure...
297w ago - Update: Sony has officially confirmed that the new PlayStation Store interface will also be coming to North America in mid-April.
To quote: Customers will be able to access, browse, shop and download content as usual prior to the store's re-opening. However, no additional downloadable content will be posted prior to then, including this Thursday, April 3rd, and next Thursday, April 10th.
Regularly scheduled content updates will resume with the Store's re-opening, at which time additional games and game-related items will be added, including the downloadable version of the highly-anticipated exclusive PS3 title Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.
Sony has released 3 sample images of the new design for the PlayStation store and said that "Content will be suspended for two weeks while the improvements are carried out but users can look forward to a special update in mid-April."
Sony has also reportedly told the media that the PlayStation Store face lift on PS3 will no longer use the PS3 Web browser, and will require new firmware upgrade version 2.30. The facelift is said to be much faster and cache all images correctly.
