PS3 Firmware 2.0 Detailed, Hits Next Week

50°
352w ago - An informed UK reader sends word of the Playstation 3's 2.0 firmware release, which he says is supposed to hit on Oct. 30. While the source appears to be genuine, I am a little doubtful of the timing since 1.94 seems to be just hitting now with copies of Ratchet and Clank, so take this, as you should all rumors, with a grain of salt.

Chief among the updates is the inclusion of cross media bar customization, a separate Playstation Network category, music and photo playlists and the ability to turn your PS3 on and off with PSP Remote Play. Hit the jump for the full break down of what we're told will be coming in this rather robust update.

PS3 Firmware v1.94 Adds DualShock3 Support

50°
352w ago - The newest PlayStation 3 system software update to version 1.94 adds firmware-level support for the upcoming rumble-enabled DualShock3 controller. Though the update is not yet available for download, it's bundled with Insomniac's Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, the first retail game with built-in support for the DualShock3.

By pressing the middle PS button on a PS3 controller, the DualShock3's rumble can be toggled on or off from the Controller Setting menu in-game. Listed as the "vibration function," rumble will obviously only be felt with DualShock3 controllers and not the rumble-less Sixaxis.

Sony plans to release the DualShock3 in Japan this November, with the peripheral coming to the U.S. and Europe this spring. Until then, check out the Shack's list of game's that will feature or be updated to feature DualShock3 rumble support.

Hitachi's 100GB quad layer disc to be PS3 compatible via Firmware update

50°
354w ago - Hitachi has reportedly confirmed that its new 100GB quad layer Blu-ray disc will be compatible with the PS3 and existing Blu-ray players after a firmware update has been installed. This is promising news for all early adopters as they can sleep safe in the knowledge that they won't get left behind. The 100GB disc will also give Sony and its partners huge bragging rights over the HD-DVD camp who have been touting a 51GB capacity disc.

From the article: Hitachi is now working on improving the signal quality of its quad-layer technology so that it will be ready for market. The company also said that it is working on an eight-layer variant of the technology, which would yield a Blu-ray Disc capable of holding 200GB.

Although no new hardware may be required to read the additional layers of Hitachi's Blu-ray Disc, it is still unclear what costs, if any, would be added onto the manufacturing side of the equation. Should expensive equipment be required to manufacture the discs, movie studios may opt to release their titles across two Blu-ray Discs rather than cram Movie and special feature data onto a single disc.

While the Blu-ray camp has its hopes in Hitachi's multi-layer disc technology, the HD DVD group recently approved a triple-layer disc that is capable of holding 51GB. In order to reach...
