PS3 Firmware Tool 1.00 Sneak Peek

400°
366w ago - Over the past few weeks, mainman has been working on a tool, with the assistance of our other PS3 Devs. This tool creates user-readable files from the PS3 flash dumps.

PS3's have two flashes, the firmware is spanned across both ot them. On boot they are interleaved and byte swapped. This tool recreates the process which interleaves and byte swaps the flashes.

This tool then creates a folder named PS3Nand-XXX.XXXX, where XXX.XXXX is the contents of "sdk_version", which is a file that stores the firmware revision of the PS3.

Upon completing that, the tool extracts every file from the flash, into said folder. Alas, all of the files (list below) are encrypted, but they are interesting nevertheless.

However if a PS3 was upgraded, it keeps a copy of the older flash as well. Say you are on 1.50, and upgrade to 1.60, it keeps 1.50 on there, and adds 1.60. The second firmware in this case, is not dumped (yet).

There are still a few bugs, it does not extract both firmware versions on a PS3, like the previous mentioned case. It also searches as a start for a fixed position, so it may not work with all dumps. We have had the most success with Infectus dumps, which you can get at Hardstore.

Latest PS3 Firmware 2.10 Update blocks RSX exploit?

50°
366w ago - Many users are reporting that the latest PS3 Firmware v2.10 may well have cancelled a potential RSX exploit that allowed full GPU access on the PS3.

It is no secret that Sony likes to tackle against any potential hacks, and if this is true it would be a discouragement to further Linux development under full GPU access on the PS3.

As always, only time will tell for sure...

Sony sneaks extra features PS3 into Firmware v2.10

366w ago - The big new features of the latest PS3 firmware DivX and WMV playback, but let us spare a thought for some of the lesser features that sneaked into the latest update. There is a new planet music visualizer, they fixed the video thumbnails in folders not playing and lastly BD/DVD dynamic range control has been tweaked.

And who could forget that the PS3 is now well equipped for the 1.1 profile movies that will hit early next year.

To quote: As well as providing DivX and WMV playback in the latest firmware as we revealed yesterday (which is now out, by the way) Sony have added a couple of really cool new features that aren't documented in the changelist.

Firstly, they've added a new 'planet' music visualiser from our friends at Q Games (press 'square' when playing music) which has got to be the most amazing thing we've ever seen. They've also fixed the video thumbnails in folders not playing, and finally BD/DVD Dynamic Range Control has been tweaked for those late night sessions. With the recent changes the PS3 is now the ultimate Blu-ray player, and the first 1.1 Profile movies come out on the 1st of January.
