Sony: PS3 Offers Unprecedented Value, Secures Blu-ray Format

100°
304w ago - Sony's Jack Tretton has commented that the PS3 will help secure the Blu-ray format just as the PS2 did with the DVD format.

He also expressed that the PS3 offers 'unprecedented value' and as such there are no immediate plans to reduce the price of the PS3.

To quote: "Just as PlayStation 2 is delivering on a 10-year lifecycle and helped expand and solidify the DVD format for home entertainment along the way," he said, "we believe Playstation 3 offers the same promise by helping secure the Blu-ray format."

Tretton went on to say that the PS3 offers "unprecedented value" as the total home entertainment solution for the next decade, clarifying perhaps that the business has no immediate plans to reduce the price of the PS3.

GDC '09: Sony Offers Huge Incentive for PSN Exclusivity

50°
305w ago - Remember that biased and irrational media blowup concerning the PSN bandwidth fee? Yeah, well, who thinks publishers won't want to put their games on the PSN now?

As reported by [Register or Login to view links], Sony will match the development budget of a self-published video game if that title remains exclusive to the PlayStation Network.

The first game to take advantage of the deal is the recently released Burn Zombie Burn!, and Sony says they're "looking for a great many more titles," so pay attention, self-publishers! Chris Eden, Sony development relations manager, says they're ready to put their money where their mouth is:

"It's all very well for us as platform holders to say 'put all your money into PlayStation Network, it's a fantastic idea', but are we prepared to put or money where our mouth is? The answer is yes. We're looking for a number of great games, and in return for exclusivity we'll match your development budget with guaranteed royalties."

This deal is called the "Pub Fund" and just to be clear, Sony is not purchasing exclusive rights for the games in question (a practice Microsoft...

Microsoft Still Offers Boxes for Dead Systems at No Charge

400°
308w ago - A story [Register or Login to view links] earlier today via The Consumerist stated Microsoft had stopped offering free boxes to consumers to ship dead Xbox 360 consoles to replacement centers was recently cleared up.

Here's the official statement:

"Reports that Microsoft now requires consumers to find their own packaging for sending product to Xbox 360 customer support are inaccurate.

Our policy allows customers to choose whether they would like Microsoft to ship them a box and shipping label or print an electronic label and ship their console using their own packaging in an effort to speed up the repair process." – Microsoft Spokesperson

There you have it, if your system dies - hopefully sometime within the three-year warranty - Microsoft will still give you a free box, complete with packaging, to send your Xbox 360 off to virtual heaven.

PS3 HD Plus PHE-01 eSATA HDD Extender Offers Limitless Storage

400°
312w ago - According to pictures below (courtesy of Gemaga, linked above) this eSATA adapter dubbed the PS3 HD Plus PHE-01 latches to the bottom of any PS3 promising connectivity to an external SATA hard disk for some majorly powerful storage capacity.

Sure, there are other ways (such as [Register or Login to view links] or [Register or Login to view links]) of getting massive amounts of bytes onto the PS3.

One can simply swap in a new internal 2.5" SATA into the system, or even just hook up any old USB hard drive with little hassle; however, the latter won't give the same transfer speed as an eSATA.

From the looks of it, the PHE-01 also comes with an additional four USB ports.

Unfortunately, aside from what can be derived from the pictures there aren't any further details on this product yet... time will tell.
