The Polarity of Outland is Hitting PSN on June 14, 2011

150w ago - Outland Lead Designer Aki Raula has announced this weekend that The Polarity of Outland is hitting PSN on June 14, 2011.

To quote: As we are now about to release Outland, I thought it would be nice to share some thoughts on developing the game, especially on its main feature, the "Ikaruga" polarity mechanic. Thinking about it almost two years later, it feels like we came about the concept easily and naturally.

At the very beginning I had an idea on creating an action adventure platforming game that would give the player similar emotions and encounters I experienced when playing some of my favorite platforming games in the 80's (Pitfall II, Jumpman Jr., Rick Dangerous etc. - see, I never had a NES).

Early versions of Outland had a guy jumping, shooting and sliding around in a jungle environment. We expanded that basic gameplay by adding a special spirit mode that made the character move faster and cause more damage.

Our spirit mode, which we called the "Flow" mode, was one where you turned from a normal guy into a superhero; blue energy surrounded you and you were nearly invincible. We toyed around different variations of the concept, from having an additional boost mode, to having Flow sources/springs in the levels...

Video: Dead Island PS3 Announcement Trailer and Entrails

160w ago - SCEE Blog Manager James Gallagher has shared the Dead Island PS3 announcement trailer and entrails today, with details as follows:

Last month, the phrase 'Dead Island' appeared and a click revealed it to be a game, and not a newly announced game, but one revealed some years ago and largely forgotten about.

One stylish trailer later and it was one of the phrases on the tip of everyone's Twit-tongue.

"The trailer we released was mostly a blessing," says Vincent Kummer, Dead Island's brand manager at Deep Silver, "because when you put something out there you don't expect to generate that much interest in the game, especially not for free.

However, we are cautious that people might be expecting things from the game, based on that trailer, that simply aren't there. We're aiming to make it very clear, early on, what the game is actually about."

Which is why they've invited me to a warehouse in East London to crawl through underground passages, check out the game and eat pizza in a deckchair. Dead Island is a first-person action RPG set on a tropical holiday island during the zombie...

Outland Hits PSN This Spring, Includes Two Co-Op Modes & More

50°
161w ago - Sony's Senior Social Media Specialist Sid Shuman has revealed today that Outland is hitting PSN this Spring with two Co-Op Modes and more, as follows:

Last fall, I got a first look at Outland, a side-scrolling action game that casts you as an urban sophisticate-turned-spiritual warrior.

The dreamlike visuals, fluid platform mechanics, and sharp sword-based combat pointed to a fascinating PSN game.

Since then, developer Housemarque (creators of PSN classics Dead Nation and Super Stardust HD has been busy fleshing out the game with details that will make fans of the classic 2D side-scroller Castlevania: Symphony of the Night beam with delight.

A gorgeously illustrated introductory cinematic introduces you to the protagonist, a nameless, faceless modern-day urban dweller haunted by visions of a vast wheel, endlessly turning.

Maddened by the visions and unable to find relief, the protagonist seeks out a mystic shaman who guides him on a path of spiritual awakening and alerts him to a timeless, cyclical battle with a pair of god-like Sisters who created the world and now seek to destroy it. Guess what? The fate of the world is now in your hands. Lucky you!

"The Sisters are the final bosses in the game," explained Producer Adam Sarasohn....

Video: Nordcurrent Introduces Jewel Keepers: Easter Island PSP

50°
180w ago - Today Alexander Bravve at Nordcurrent has shared a video introduction of Jewel Keepers: Easter Island for Sony's PSP handheld console.

To quote: We are releasing Jewel Keepers: Easter Island, our latest minis title, very soon, and I wanted to tell you a few things about it.

As you might have guessed from the title, Jewel Keepers: Easter Island is a Match-3 game set on the Easter Island. As in all Match-3 games, you are required to swap adjacent jewels to put three jewels of the same colour next to each other in one row or column.

However, we have added a few gameplay elements that make Jewel Keepers different. You can have a look at the trailer to see the differences:

When you start a new level, all cells are grey. When jewels disappear, they turn grey cells into golden cells, and the goal of the game is to turn all cells into golden ones. This sounds pretty straight-forward when you think of an ordinary rectangular level.

However, as you progress further, you will be faced with more sophisticated level shapes, and it will get more and more challenging. And satisfying, once you complete the level.

And a few words about bonuses: we wanted to make bonuses a bit different from other games. We have time...
