Critical Reception: Capcom's Devil May Cry 4

100°
345w ago - This week's edition of the regular Critical Reception column examines online reaction to Devil May Cry 4 Capcom's action franchise sequel that "delivers polished, fiendish thrills that eclipse other games in the series, and almost all contemporaries in the genre," according to reviews.

After finding success on the PlayStation 2, Capcom's Devil May Cry franchise makes its multiplatform debut on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with Devil May Cry 4. This new entry notably replaces the series' standard and well-liked protagonist Dante with a new character named Nero, who possesses an entirely different array of weaponry and abilities.

Though Dante remains playable in portions of Devil May Cry 4, series fans have wondered if Nero would be as likeable a character as Dante, and have expressed concern over the resulting shift in gameplay technique. Critics have responded well to the change thus far, and average a score of 84 out of 100 at Metacritic.com.

Joe Juba at Game Informer rates Devil May Cry 4 at 9 out of 10, emphasizing that Nero is a good fit for the franchise. "I'll just get this out of the way: Nero is awesome," he assures. "Any reservations fans may have about the young upstart replacing Dante as the main hero will evaporate in the first hour of Devil May Cry 4."

50°
347w ago - Capcom has confirmed that the demo of Devil May Cry 4 will hit X-Box Live and the PlayStation Network this Thursday. It should be on Xbox Live at 2am PST and between 2 and 3pm PST on the PlayStation Network should you care for the finer time details.

To quote: That's right kids, you heard it here first: The Devil May Cry 4 demo you've heard about will be up on XBox Live and PlayStation Network this Thursday, January 24, 2008. We're told to expect it up on XBox Live at 2am PST, and between 2 and 3pm PST on PlayStation Network.

Upside: this demo is actually fun.

Downside: While there will be plenty of devil-bringification and even a pretty sweet boss battle against this guy (boss battles are definitely a major highlight of the full game), it is just a demo, and only scratches the surface of the DMC4 fun. Even if I weren't shilling shamelessly for Capcom, I'd still have to say this is probably the best Devil May Cry ever.

Check it out Thursday, and read on for more details about the demo, and of course pick up the full game, available February 5th.

The demo introduces gamers to the gothic-inspired supernatural world of Devil May Cry 4, new protagonist Nero and the awesome power of his Devil Bringer. The demo consists of a sampling of sections from the full...

351w ago - According to Internet reports, Famitsu has revealed that Devil May Cry 4 for the PS3 will include exclusive features including 5.1 LPCM audio, PSN support and the option to install data to the hard drive. The game reportedly takes up 5GB of storage.

To quote: In this month's issue of Famitsu, a popular Japanese magazine, they reveal that Capcom will be including exclusive features in the PS3 version of Devil May Cry 4.

Some of these new features include; 5.1 LPCM audio, PSN support, and the option to install data to the hard drive. Apparently though, game data takes up 5GB of storage, but on the bright side of things, it removes all load times in the game.

As of now, there is no word on what Capcom has planned for the PlayStation Network. Whether it's episodic content, new characters, new weapons, or even new bosses, we'll take it!
