Video: YEBIS 2 is Bringing Visual Fireworks to PS4 Developers

41w ago - Sony Lead Software Engineer and Shader Architect Masaki Kawase at Silicon Studio announced today that YEBIS 2 is bringing visual fireworks to PS4 developers.

To quote: I'm Masaki Kawase, Lead Software Engineer and Shader Architect from Silicon Studio, and I'm thrilled to talk with you directly on game development for PlayStation 4.

It's an exciting time since E3, but let's roll up our sleeves and get into the nitty-gritty on making games for PS4.

We've been partners with Sony Computer Entertainment for years now (PS3 fans remember Silicon Studio for the PS3-exclusive 3D Dot Game Heroes), and we couldn't be more delighted to work on PS4. PlayStation is in prime position with PS3 and PS Vita, but PS4 will bring souped-up visuals for gamers anticipating cutting-edge experiences.

We're made up of two parts: first, we make traditional games, but second, we provide middleware solutions to developers around the world. YEBIS 2 is our most recent middleware offering, a real-time post-processing lens simulation middleware, famously utilized in Square Enix's trailer of Final Fantasy XV.

We've worked with Square Enix for years, and we are thrilled to integrate our post-processing effects...

Let's take a look at some of those titles:

Transistor

When Supergiant Games unveiled Transistor in March I was smitten. When I played it at PAX East I was in love (I MAY have skipped the 4 hour line to check out the game. Supergiant's newest game has all the style, mystery and flare we have come to expect from the creators of Bastion.

I look forward to unraveling Red's journey through the City. We have been eager to work with Supergiant and are happy to announce that Transistor will make its console debut on PlayStation 4. Welcome to the PlayStation family, Supergiant Games. We're excited to have you.

PlayStation 4 / PS4 Developers Rumored to Access 7GB GDDR5 RAM

500°
54w ago - While it is currently rumored that Sony will unveil PlayStation 4 later this month of in early May, today PS4Daily (linked above) reports that while the PS4 will ship with 8GB of GDDR5 memory, developers will only have access to 7GB of RAM.

Below are the details, to quote: "The PlayStation 4 will ship with a massive 8 GB of GDDR5 memory, which is a huge upgrade compared to the current generation consoles. However, according to a PlayStation 4 developer PS4Daily spoke to, they have access to “only” 7 GB of RAM. The remaining 1 GB is reserved for the operating system and background tasks.

Sony showcased a lot of PlayStation 4 features during the unveiling in February. This includes deep social features running in the background, new sharing options where players can watch each other play, and background downloading of games. All this chews up quite a bit of memory. Still, having access to 7 GB of super-fast GDDR5 memory is a lot better than the 512 MB in the PS3.

Sony originally shipped dev kits to third party developers with only 4 GB RAM, and kept the true RAM amount secret from third party developers in order to keep it secret from Microsoft as well. Developers...
