Sony Unveils Nine PlayStation Vita Tips and Tricks for Gamers

650°
127w ago - Sony Senior Social Media Specialist Sid Shuman has unveiled nine tips and tricks for next-generation handheld gamers below today!

To quote: If you've picked up PS Vita then you've probably been too busy plowing through the dense launch line-up to have spent much time browsing the Settings menu.

Luckily, you don't need to - we've spent plenty of time with PlayStation's new crown jewel and we've put together a few favorite tips and tricks we wanted to share. Of course, this is just a start: We want your tips, too!

If you've discovered any favorite PS Vita functions, please share them in the comments for all to enjoy this weekend.

1. Order in the court! By now, you've probably figured out how to move your game and app bubbles around the Home Menu by pressing and holding one using the front touchscreen, enabling you to drag it around into different frame.

You can even change the background color or image by tapping the theme icon in the bottom right of each frame. Get creative and design your own background images (which you can transfer to your PS Vita via PS3) like James Gallagher from the EU PlayStation Blog did here.

2. Let there be light. You can adjust your PS Vita's OLED screen brightness mid-game without the hassle of jumping...

222w ago - SCEE European Product Manager Cristina Giuliano has shared a video announcement today on a Hustle Kings PS3 Nine Ball competition where entrants can win a 46" Bravia HDTV by clearing 9-balls!

To quote: PlayStation EU and Bravia are giving you the opportunity to win a fantastic 46" Bravia EX703 HDTV or, for the runners up, € 50 to spend on PSN simply by serving up a 'perfect' 9-ball pool match on Hustle Kings!

All you need to do to enter is clear all of the balls in a 9 ball match in one run from the break (which isn't so difficult, especially with the 'pro tips' below).

Clear up in superb style and, if you set the highest score, Bravia will maximize your high-def PlayStation experience with a 46″ Full HDTV!

The four runners-up will receive a PSN wallet top-up of € 50 too, so even if you just miss out on the HDTV your super-sharp skills will be rewarded.

How to get involved:

Step 1: Set up a Standard 9-ball match.

Step 2: Break and win the match by clearing up all 9 balls in your visit to the table (so that your opponent never takes a shot!).

Step 3: When the match results are shown, save your replay (by pressing square).

Step 4: Upload the entire...

Sony: PS2 Turns Nine Years Old, System's Life Cycle to Continue

500°
248w ago - The PS2 turns nine years old this week, which Sony originally launched in the US sporting a $299 price tag.

The slimline PlayStation 2 console, introduced in 2004, still remains available on store shelves for a retail price of $99.

According to Sony Computer Entertainment America, the console has a worldwide installed base of nearly 140 million, with a library approaching 10,000 games having sold more than 500 million copies combined.

Although Nintendo's GameCube and Microsoft's original Xbox ceased production years ago, Sony today declared that the PS2 "shows no signs of slowing down" at the tail end of its 10-year life span.

According to the NPD Group, the PS2 sold 146,000 last month, down from 173,500 in September 2008 and 215,000 in September of 2007.

To quote from Sony's Senior Public Relations Specialist Abby Reyes:

"There's no set date for when the life cycle of PlayStation 2 will end. As long as people keep playing, and publishers keep putting out great new titles, the console's life cycle will continue.

The longevity of the PlayStation 2 can be directly attributed to its versatility. Because it's not only a game console, but a home entertainment hub, it has found its place in one out of every three U.S. households....

The Top Nine Greatest Video Game Heroines

350°
285w ago - From the day when video games developed the graphic capabilities to simulate cleavage, women in games have been designed mostly from the blueprints of a horny 13-year-old boy's fantasy.

If a female character wasn't in need of rescue - yes, we're talking about you, Donkey Kong - she seemed designed specifically to reinforce negative body images.

But there have been a handful of female video game characters that Brandi Chastain would be proud of, with more seeming to appear in recent years. Below are our picks for the nine greatest video game heroines of all time.

Each was chosen by The Chronicle's video game critics, with the list arranged in descending order of awesomeness, and the name of the nominating critic in parenthesis. Only playable characters are included, and they were judged on toughness and coolness, with no swimsuit or evening gown competition. (This isn't the Maxim magazine list of the nine hottest chicks of gaming.)

We considered adding Ms. Pac Man or Thyra the Valkyrie from the arcade classic Gauntlet, but decided to focus on more modern games. Consider both of those older characters the recipients of a lifetime achievement award.

Lara Croft (Tomb Raider, first appearance 1996): We considered leaving Croft off the list altogether because of...
