If you were to look at Heavenly Sword in a series of glimpses -- or, say, videos that appeared online prerelease -- you'd be forgiven for not knowing exactly what kind of game it is. Clearly, it's action and features a lot of fighting, but is it a God of War clone? Is it a Dynasty Warriors clone? A Sniper Elite clone? In short, yes. But the long answer is a little more complex....

A good half of Heavenly Sword is reminiscent of God of War -- you run through dramatic environments, hit enemies with flashy attacks, participate in button-pressing minigames, and even follow an oddly similar plot. Another quarter of the game ramps up the number of enemies, so the experience feels more like Dynasty Warriors. And then the remaining portion of Heavenly Sword involves long-range arrow and cannon attacks using the PS3's tilt controls. There's where your sniper skills come into play.

It's a pretty compelling package, especially when you consider that there aren't many g... More »

In addition to a heavy reliance on master recording tracks, Activision and RedOctane have signed on a number of big-name rockers to appear as bosses in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. One of the major announcements coming out of the GHIII camp during this year's E3 Media and Business Summit was that Guns N' Roses thrasher Slash would be doling out his special brand of rock for the rhythm game. Earlier this month, Poison frontman Bret Michaels was named as the second legend of rock to take the stage.

The third epic rocker to lend his signature twang in person to Guitar Hero III will reportedly be Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello. Speaking to Rolling Stone, Morello reportedly confirmed his appearance as a boss character, saying, "Whenever I play Guitar Hero, my opponent always kicks my ass on my own riffs...Now that I'm actually in the game, I hope the digital me will win once in a while!" A RedOctane rep has since confirmed Morello's presence in the game, n... More »

Harmonix and MTV Games announced today that they are partnering with Rhino Entertainment to bring 18 psychedelic tracks from legendary rockers the Grateful Dead to Rock Band in the form of downloadable content. No word yet on how the tracks will be distributed, whether in the form of albums or smaller packages, but confirmed songs include "Casey Jones," "Sugar Magnolia," "Touch of Grey," "Truckin'," and "Uncle John's Band."

"Grateful Dead's unique fusion of rock, folk, bluegrass, blues, and jazz challenged traditional musical boundaries and pushed the limits of creativity to produce a signature sound that is undeniably their own," said Paul DeGooyer, senior VP of audio, home video and electronic games at MTV. "With an enormous legion of fans all over the world, Rock Band will give players a chance to interact with the music of these beloved rock pioneers and experience what Grateful Dead did best -- jam from the depths of their souls."

Monolith Productions is a developer in a prime position to shed some light on the situation, having achieved critical and retail success with their launch title Condemned: Criminal Origins, and working on their follow-up with the upcoming sequel, Condemned 2: Bloodshot. "There is a certain satisfaction in taking on major challenges and overcoming them -- and this was definitely a major challenge. Sega also wanted us to hit the launch date... [and] gave us great testing and localization support to help make sure that we did hit our dates," says producer David Hasle, who later adds, "We knew that being present at launch would provide us more time to get more game titles developed internally at Monolith Productions for the 360 over the course of the lifespan of the 360 so this was seen as a good business decision. Plus being one of six or seven games is better than being one of 50 or 60 games on the shelf at your local game store."

The making of Condemned 2 is not just about ... More »

Thankfully not content with a shinier sequel, Criterion is reinventing its fabled racing franchise for this generation of consoles (the Burnout Revenge 360 port was more of a facelift). Gone are the linear tracks and tiered level structure; Burnout Paradise takes place in one enormous city that's open from the start and never stops to load. And lest you fret, the game still blazes by at 60 frames a second, the buttery-smooth visuals complemented by cars that crumple more convincingly than ever. The series is still about viscerally destructive driving, and the audio-visual impact of hitting a wall at 200 m.p.h. is as "next-gen" as anything we've experienced.

Paradise makes the most of its open-world structure, assuring that it's more than just a gimmick or several levels strung together. The game encourages you to learn the map, and familiarize yourself with where the major landmarks are (most races end at one of them). Every street has a name, and street signs pop up on t... Conan the game isn't directly based on any particular Conan story, but fans of the original works will recognize returning locations from the original stories, like the lands of Kush and Stygia. Of course, there will be a number of original, fantastic environments through which to slaughter, too, such as a set of ocean ruins we got to see that are full of gigantic living statues and semi-corporeal, ghost-like enemies that your weapons can't always hit. At the outset, Conan has lost four of his enchanted pieces of armor which he intends to recover, and each one will grant him a new magical attack when he retrieves it. As a barbarian, Conan doesn't especially relish the thought of using magic, but he also recognizes its utility when there are all these enemies just asking to be driven before him. Along the way, Conan will encounter A'kanna, a lithe and sensual archer who seems like she'll act as a wily feminine foil for all of Conan's trademark bluster and bravado.

Earlier this week, Rage Against the Machine fretter and renegade of funk Tom Morello told Rolling Stone that he would be joining Guns N' Roses' Slash and Poison's Bret Michaels as a boss in Activision and RedOctane's Guitar Hero III. All well and good, but Morello's inclusion presented the obvious query of which Rage song would get worked into the Neversoft-developed rhythm game.

Today, Activision officially announced Morello's inclusion in GHIII, and also revealed that gamers can expect to engage Morello in rhythmic fisticuffs to the tune of "Bulls on Parade." Ranked as the 15th greatest metal song of all time by VH1, "Bulls on Parade" features Morello's signature synthetic guitar sounds. Adding a wrinkle to the gameplay, Activision notes that players will be required to "emulate some of Morello's extremely innovative guitar-playing antics." Guitar Hero III is rated T for Teen and will be available for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, and Wii on October 28.

Bringing new meaning to the word ‘draconian’, Microsoft has just banned a couple of gamers from Xbox Live for around 8000 years.

The poor chaps in question – ‘Scar’ and ‘dak is back’ certainly misbehaved. They managed somehow to obtain access to the Halo 3 ‘Epsilon’ code, which is supposed to be used for Bungie’s internal testing purposes only. It’s not clear how they managed this feat but they were well and truly busted by dint of the fact that the world can see what you’re playing whenever you’re connected to Xbox Live. Obviously somebody at Microsoft or Bungie was watching...

And so both gamers woke up one morning, no doubt refreshed and ready to face a day of top Halo 3 challenges, only to find that their Live accounts had been banned until December 31st 9,999. Ooyah!

Well we can hardly blame these guys for having a go, even if we don’t condone such behaviour. But this is hardly a case of appropriate justice and it... More »
