For the time being this is simply a rumor, however, French site JV247.com (linked above) is reporting that a game publisher told them Sony was planning to add PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility in a recent PlayStation 3 Firmware Update... but pulled it at the last minute.

They continue to mention that it may be added in a future update, and that we may see PlayStation 2 games on the PlayStation Store.

Adding fuel to the rumor is news that the original Medal of Honor and the ESRB-rated PlayStation 2 game "Rayman 2: Revolution" are slated for the PlayStation 3, which usually means they’re going to pop up on the PlayStation Store at some point in the future.

As always, more details to come as they are available!

The musician behind the song that caused the highly anticipated PlayStation 3 game “Little Big Planet” to get recalled just days before its release has defended his song in a statement issued to MTV Multiplayer.

Perhaps even more significantly, singer Toumani Diabate has explained what the song is about and why its inclusion of verses from the Qur’an is his “way to attract and inspire people toward Islam.”

Multiplayer received the statement late yesterday, following conversations with two Muslim experts who helped illuminate the reasons why Diabate’s song might trouble some Muslims and just how similar — or different — this situation is from the publication of the Danish cartoons that inspired deadly riots across the world.

They note the complication that there is no explicit rule in Islam prohibiting a song like Diabate’s.

Diabate’s song first was initially flagged on the official PS3 message boards by a M... More »

Microsoft is now winding up operations in several cities in India, as trouble seems to be brewing over the performance of its Xbox 360 console, according to a report from CNBC-TV18.

The report, which cited anonymous sources, concludes that Microsoft has withdrawn from several Tier-I cities due to lackluster sales. Its Entertainment and Devices Division has also reportedly withdrawn the marketing budget for the current fiscal.

The Xbox 360, which launched in India in September of 2006, has been facing dismal sales already due to sloppy customer support, high hardware failure, and pirated games, the report said. Games are easily available in the grey market for Rs 100, while official titles cost upwards of Rs 2,500.

Microsoft has already repeatedly refused to share its India sales numbers.

“The Microsoft Entertainment Devices Division is very much on track with its targeted business plans,” a Microsoft India spokesperson told CNBC.... More »

SpiralFrog.com, an ad-supported Web site that allows visitors to download music and videos free of charge, was scheduled to launch Monday in the U.S. and Canada after months of "beta" testing.

The music service, which has arranged to pay record companies a cut of its advertising revenue, aims to lure music fans who normally flock to online file-swapping networks to share and download music for free. The recording industry has sued thousands of computer users for doing so in recent years.

"We believe it will be a very powerful alternative to the pirate sites," said Joe Mohen, chairman and founder of New York-based SpiralFrog Inc. "With SpiralFrog you know what you’re getting ... there’s no threat of viruses, adware or spyware."

Look at David Beckham showing off his rippling clothes and acutely replicated facial detail afforded by the power of PS3 and Xbox 360 in FIFA 08.

It all looks very nice, doesn't it? Even if the shots don't look like they were taken from the in-game engine, but you get the idea.

FIFA 08 isn't all about visuals this time round, because as well as a host of new options and refreshed gameplay physics, EA recently confirmed that it's slapping 10-player online play into this beauty as well. Get in.
