Sony's semi-official blog ThreeSpeech has posted an article that asks AI coders from a number of studios "how close are we to creating truly autonomous AI characters" in games. To quote:

To kick off, we’re looking at enemies who think for themselves. How close are we to creating truly autonomous AI characters, able to react in real-time to player actions and formulate their own responses? Some developers have been experimenting with techniques such as Goal-Orientated Action Planning (GOAP) for several years in order to create ‘thinking’ beings.
But is this desirable? And is there still a role for scripted AI, in which the baddies perform actions based on pre-programmed, pre-determined elements? We ask the makers of F.E.A.R, Prototype, Dead Space and Wheelman.

Update: Apparently, the European PSN store still has the title on its list. However, the American store doesn’t even show it on the download history.
It looks like Mortal Kombat fanatics won't be getting their kicks from the franchise's early releases for a while as Midway Games' Mortal Kombat 2 has been pulled from the PlayStation Store.
What's even worse is that the game's been removed so completely that it doesn't even show up on users' recently downloaded lists, so reinstalling it is no longer an option.
There is a bit of good news, though. According to a Sony PR guy, the removal was due to an issue that occurred after the firmware 2.50 update.
The Sony rep also said that the game will be back on the store as soon as it's fixed.
Today Midway released the names of the full cast for Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, including such characters as Shao Kahn, Raiden, Darkseid, and Deathstroke.
For those of you looking to pick up the game, MK vs DC is set to release on November 10.

It appears Midway’s financial woes continue. Today the company formally announced that it has canceled an “as-yet-unannounced” project in development at its Austin, Texas-based studio.
In further bleak news, as part of an ongoing initiative to “maximize its development resources and apply manpower and capital to projects with the highest chances of success,” approx. 90 of all 130 employees employed by the studio will be laid off.
To quote: Matt Booty, interim CEO and president of Midway Games Inc. commented, “While this was a very difficult decision, we feel it was the right thing to do for the future of Midway. We view every game as an investment that must meet certain standards for quality, scheduling, and profitability. SCEA have issued a post E3 conference press release in which they highlight that they gave attendees a look at over 10 never before seen titles. Sony say God Of War 3 is in full 1080p High Definition and that over 350 new titles from their publishing partners will be released this fiscal year for the PS3, PSN, PSP and PS2.
The press release also states that SCEA will introduce the PS3 Greatest Hits program beginning July 28. With 10 titles as the initial inductees, PlayStation fans have the opportunity to experience the best titles created for the platform at a reduced price of $29.99.

The always-popular Electronic Entertainment Expo has returned to its roots this year, with the annual game show moving back to the Los Angeles Convention Center after a solo season on the sunny beaches of Santa Monica.
Kicking off on July 14 and running through July 17, E3 2008 showcases several of the year's biggest software titles from the industry's biggest publishers.
To help celebrate the festivities, we're starting our E3 coverage right here and now. Listed below is every videogame that has been "officially confirmed" to appear so far. Just remember, don't go crazy if your most anticipated title isn't on the list -- after all, E3 is known for its surprises and secrets, not every company is going to let us know everything ahead of time.
