On the KP Report podcast today, Kojima Productions Assistant Producer Ryan Payton (along with our very own Mark MacDonald) revealed Metal Gear Solid 4 will be playable at the Tokyo Games Show, which opens its doors next Thursday. It's the first time a playable version of the game, which was originally announced back in 2005, will be shown to the public.
Payton also talked about both the positive and negative feedback from the live gameplay demo at the Metal Gear Anniversary Party last July, including concerns about the demo being heavily scripted, the graphics and animation, and the first-person view. Check out the podcast for the full details, and expect hands-on reports from 1UP when TGS starts next week.
As expected, Hideo Kojima came packing a brand-new trailer for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, one that's much more story-oriented -- including the re-introduction of Metal Gear Ray and Rex -- than ever before. Kojima stuck behind the early 2008 release date for his latest sequel, and users interested in remaining pure for his "last" installment in the series will probably want to avoid the new trailer.
Additionally, Kojima confirmed MGS4 will come bundled with a Metal Gear Online "starter pack," but declined to specify what exactly that includes. That wasn't all for the Metal Gear universe, either, as a new trailer rolled for Metal Gear Portable Ops Plus, which apparently so... More »
The core gameplay here will be quite familiar to Subsistence players, as you still run around and shoot in third-person much like in the single-player MGS games. Gone is the stilted, immobile first-person aiming mode, though. In fact, the controls and basic shooting mechanics are lifted right out of Metal Gear Solid 4, the gameplay improvements of which we detailed in our hands-on report yesterday. So here you'll use the triangle button to perform a lot of environmental interactions, like vaulting over obstacles and backing up against flat surfaces to take cover.
More importantly, you've got the new shooting controls in here as well. The auto-aim that we found a little easy and unnecessary against MGS4's AI opponents seemed much more useful in this multiplayer setting, since you can use it to shoot at other players while you're fleeing from them or trying to dodge their shots. Like in MGS4, you'll hold L1 to lock your aim to the enemy most directly in your line of sight, ... More »
Metal Gear Solid series director gives more details on PS3 stealth-actioner, reveals Metal Gear Online starter pack will be included in game.
Director Hideo Kojima appeared on stage at Konami's booth and started off by talking about the new bosses in MGS4. Although they were revealed to the press last month, this is the first time that Kojima directly showed them off to the public himself.
"In the first Metal Gear Solid, we featured a special forces unit that consisted of elite active soldiers," he explained. "In MGS2, we needed an even stronger team, and after a while of thinking, we went with a Special Forces unit that trains and instructs other special forces units. We decided to give superhuman abilities to those characters, kind of like in American comics. In MGS3, we had to make even stronger characters, so we went with a 'legendary' Special Forces unit."
"MGS4 was really tough since we had to go beyond legendary soldiers, so we thought th... More »
Do you remember when your fake ID couldn't fool the bouncer, leaving you outside sober, cold, and distanced from the girl you were looking to at least play ball with? That's kind of how we're feeling right now, after learning on the latest Kojima Productions podcast that there are no plans to bring a demo of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots to the PlayStation Store prior to launch.
Host Ryan Payton stated: "I can tell you, as of right now, we don't have any plans of uploading this demo on the PlayStation Store." And definitely, he added, no plans of "uploading [on PSN] next week." His statements were echoed by Konami's new flak master, Michael Shelling, adding "[E for All] is going to be your one chance to actually play it prior to it launching next year."
Yeah, while this news is certainly a crushing blow to the Metal Gear Solid fan base (many of which help run Joystiq), there was at least a little positive news: Shelling revealed that Konami h... More »
Konami Corp. last week debuted the English build of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3 at the E for All Expo in Los Angeles. The latest sequel in the premier franchise stuns players in the most lifelike espionage tactical gameplay in the series to date.
In the E for All demo, Snake, referred to as Old Snake in the game, is briefed by Otacon to reach a rendezvous point. The level takes place in the Middle East, similar to the setting previewed in early trailers.
Old Snake yields a new range of combat action, including a dynamic auto camouflage that will allow him to blend in to an environmental texture. Either flat on the ground or against a wall, the advanced suit will blend and increase a camouflage percentage in the right corner of the screen.
In one sequence, Snake can choose to camouflage as a statue. When perched on the statue, the context button automatically grabs the crotch of the side statue to complet... More »
Konami announced today that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots would be delayed till second quarter 2008.
The official press release states that Konami had initially intended to release MGS4 this winter. However, to make further improvements and to add finishing touches, Konami has pushed back the release date to ensure a quality product.
Konami finshed their press release with the statement, " Konami will continue its efforts to make "Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots" meet everyone's expectations."
"Metal Gear Solid 4" is not only one of the most eagerly awaited games for Sony's PlayStation 3, it is also among the last of a dying breed -- games designed exclusively for one gaming console.
Developed by Japan's Konami (9766.T: Quote, Profile, Research) and due out next year, the game is the latest installment in the action series that produced smash hits for Sony's (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) earlier PlayStation 2.
It's a prime example of a game known in the industry as a "third party exclusive", as opposed to "first party" ones made by game-console makers Sony, Microsoft (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) and Nintendo (7974.OS: Quote, Profile, Research).
For years, the console makers have sought to secure such exclusives as a way to drive adoption of their machines.
"We're telling our fans that if you want to play 'Metal Gear Solid 4', you have to buy a PS3," said Ryan Payton, the assistant producer of the game.
Hey, everyone. It’s time again for the PLAYSTATION Store weekly update.

Since the announcement of Metal Gear Online, it’s been left unclear whether or not it would be released as a standalone title or bundled together with Metal Gear Solid 4. It’s only commonsense that the two should be paired together, but early talk didn’t seem to suggest that they would be.
Well, the January ‘08 issue of the new PlayStation: The Official Magazine (formerly PSM) was just dropped off in my mailbox headlined on the cover with exclusive confirmation that MGS4 and MGO are in fact being integrated into one value-packed MGS experience for the PS3. Hurray!
The news comes as part of the magazine’s “Top 10 Games of ‘08″ cover story, with MGS4 obviously sneaking away with the #1 spot. Beyond the exciting news of the MGS4/MGO merger, there are some other details revealed about MGO too, including word that it’ll support up to 16 players in modes like Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, King of the Hill and Team Sneak on five “Starter Pack” ma...
