Manhunt 2 was banned. But now developer Rockstar Games has modified the game so that it has received an M for Mature rating for ages 17 and over.
Just one day after Rockstar Games announced that Manhunt 2 had secured an M Rating in the US, media watchdog group Campaign For a Commercial-Free Childhood has challenged the decision by the ESRB to re-rate the game, and is demanding to know why it has been allowed a lower rating than the previously Adult Only (AO) it received.
I think we'd all like to know what was cut from Manhunt 2, but only one thing's for sure. Manhunt 2. October 31st.
Take-Two Interactive's financial fortunes have run hot and cold since the announcement of a delay for Grand Theft Auto IV. Disappointment at the publisher's biggest game being pushed back into next year was offset partially by news that Rockstar Games' Manhunt 2 had been cleared for a North American release next month and an avalanche of glowing reviews for 2K Boston's BioShock.
Today the publisher announced its financial results for its fiscal third quarter, which ended just days before the GTAIV delay started the stock's roller coaster ride. For the three months ended July 31, Take-Two posted revenues of $206 million, down from $241 million from the same period of 2006. However, the company's losses narrowed nearly as much, with Take-Two losing nearly $59 million for the quarter, a significantly better showing than the $91 million it lost in last year's third quarter.
As for why sales were down, Take-Two blamed it on tough comparisons against the previous ... More »
We have just received an email from Attorney Jack Thompson stating that his 15-year-old son purchased the Mature-rated game BioShock from a local Best Buy. Thompson informs us that BioShock is created by "the notorious Take-Two interactive," you may remember them from publishing such ultra-violent games as Grand Theft Auto. Thompson says that in using his son in a sting operation, he's proven "that Take-Two's upcoming releases of hyperviolent and sex-themed Manhunt 2 and Grand Theft Auto IV will be widely sold to kids of all ages, despite promises by Take-Two, the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), and major retailers." No word if Thompson will allow his son to play the copy of BioShock he purchased.
Video game violence is, as ever, a hot topic, and Gamasutra and GameProducer.net asked former Thrill Kill and current Sony producer Harvard Bonin, Bizarre Creations' Peter O’Brien, Stainless Games' Ben Gunstone, and Gas Powered Games' Frank Rogan to discuss legislation, responsibility, and mature games.
Thrill Kill & Ethical Censorship
Said Bonin, "This particular topic is very timely, and also very, very complicated. As the publishing producer of a notable fighting game [Thrill Kill, pictured] that was canceled years ago I believe I have unique insight. Unlike the recent Manhunt saga it was a business and ethical decision - not a governmental censorship issue."

Update: Codemasters state: Following a review by the USK ratings board, which declined to give an official rating, Codemasters has decided not to change the artistic vision of the renowned author and filmmaker Clive Barker through cuts and extensive changes.
"Codemasters respects Mr Barker's creative ideas, despite the German distribution and marketing consequences for the title. Therefore Codemasters will release only the PC version of Clive Barker's Jericho in its original form on the 26th of October for adult gamers and Clive Barker fans."
Here's a shocker for you: Clive Barker's Jericho, the ultra-gory horror FPS from Codemasters, is facing a ban from censorship-conscious Germany as its USK ratings board refuses to issue it a rating.
However, unlike the Manhunt 2 ban ordeal which saw Rockstar forced into making changes to the game to receive an acceptable rating, Cod... More »

The BBFC has rejected a revised version of the video game Manhunt 2. This follows the rejection of the original version of the game in June. The distributor had set in motion an appeal to the Video Appeals Committee against that decision, and this was suspended while the revised version was considered for classification.
David Cooke, Director of the BBFC said: "We recognise that the distributor has made changes to the game, but we do not consider that these go far enough to address our concerns about the original version. The impact of the revisions on the bleakness and callousness of tone, or the essential nature of the gameplay, is clearly insufficient. There has been a reduction in the visual detail in some of the 'execution kills', but in others they retain their original visceral and casually sadistic nature.
We did make suggestions for further changes to the game, but the distributor has chosen not to make them, and as a result we have rejected t... More »

UTD study finds video-game market isn't reaching girls. Girls want to play video games. But boys aren't interested in making the games that girls want to play. Those are the basic findings of a new study by researchers at the University of Texas at Dallas.
The analysts surveyed 43 mothers, along with 57 daughters between the ages of 7 and 20, in California, Colorado, Florida, Michigan, New Jersey, Texas and Utah.
The study, "Serious Games for IM Generation Girls," found that all of the girls and women surveyed had played computer or video games at some point, but only three-quarters were currently into games.
And while it sounds a little stereotypical, the researchers found that girls' "interest in computer games that allowed them immersion into the virtual worlds of horses, weddings, fashion, and cars was very high."
Gears of War, Manhunt 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4, in other words, are not on their shopping lists, but The Sims sure is... More »
