Finally, after a long period of a scene that got riddled by money hungry dongle suppliers we uncover this big scam and show you how things actually work.
First of all, none of the code the dongles use comes from the creators. All files used come directly from higher PS3 firmwares. This works by using plugins / SPRX's who are basically just drivers, from a higher PS3 firmware.
To get games to work, you need to use the files from higher firmwares, that games require. Those plugins we are talking about, also have the decrypt information stored in them that the games use to work.
Some of the newer SPRX's are compatible with older firmwares and can be used on older firmwares quiet easily. All you need to do is place them in the right folder and that's it.
Of course this procedure doesn't work with all the games quite so easy, some of the 3.6+ games load right away, others need some fixing. This fixing is done by patching the SPRX's to work with the lower firmware. Porting the drivers, so they can work with lower firmwares should be the easiest...
201w ago - The price cut on the PSP devkit has already opened PSP development to more interested parties, but apparently that's not Sony's only approach to bringing in more devs to the handheld.
According to Develop (linked above), Sony is also cutting down on the time it takes for a game to pass the quality assurance process.
They're also abolishing concept approval and, perhaps best of all, they'll be instituting very low price points for new games.
As part of their bid to further propagate digital distribution especially for the PSP and the new PSP Go, Sony has already signed on over 50 developers working on new games and apps. More are also reportedly on the verge of joining.
One of the new devs working on content for the PSP platform is iPhone stalwart Subatomic Studios, who is currently preparing a PSP-exclusive version of its Fieldrunners tower defense game. India's Gameshastra and PlayStation Network vets Creat have also signed on.
To quote: "We're making games that are just 20MB each, that's less than a minute to download - instant gratification, snackable content," said Subatomic's Ash Monif. "This is an opportunity for the premier indie developers - and I hope we represent that group - to come in and offer content that will fit the PSP."
218w ago - With the start of the company's new fiscal year, Sony is devoted to pushing the PS3 as a gaming console, and has slashed prices for PS3 dev kits, as well as upgraded them to attract more developers.
To quote: In what it describes as a move to "further strengthen its support for game development on PlayStation 3," Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. is introducing a range of tool updates at lower prices.
Sony introduced new dev kit models at reduced prices: DECR-1400A for North America ($2,000) and Europe/PAL territories (€1,700), and DECR-1400J for Japan (200,000 yen). The company says the new models are the same in form factor to the commercial PS3, and claims they increase programming capabilities and graphics rendering efficiency.
At GDC 2009 today, SCE also introduced PhyreEngine version 2.40, an update to its graphics rendering engine. It includes a new "foliage rendering" system for trees and plants.
SCE will also provide a suite of tech support services for PS3 developers, promising to improve the SNC PPU toolchain, a compiler included in the SDK since February 2008.
