163w ago - Today Japanese video game peripheral manufacturer Hori has announced news of a new Sony-licensed PS3 Slim LCD screen modification that, when installed, will allow the PS3 Slim to go portable.

The devices attaches a 1,366 x 768 LCD screen and stereo speakers to your PlayStation 3 Slim console allowing you to essentially take the PS3 system anywhere you'd like.

Due out in Japan on May 27th for ¥26,040 ($275), and is able to display games in high definition (720p).

To quote: "Built by Japanese peripheral specialists Hori, it's an LCD screen that attaches to the top of the console, and is able to display games in high definition (720p).

Sounds slightly stupid, but then, it doesn't just give you a portable PS3, it gives you a portable Blu-Ray player as well (and, for the Japanese, it's even compatible with the torne digital TV peripheral). One that can display stuff in HD, for those times you're stuck at Gran's house on her old 28" SDTV.

It'll go on sale May 27 in Japan, for USD $275."

242w ago - Yesterday we reported on the upcoming Nintendo DS, and today some photos of the new Nintendo DS console's upgraded screens have been spotted on the Chinese site Yukawanet, linked above.

In the picture below, the revised screen is the one on the right side... which has a slightly larger width of 3.25 inches, in comparison to just 3 inches for the one on the left.

According to their watermarks, the origin of these 'spotted' photos is another Chinese Web site, namely TGBus.com.

247w ago - Sony has been at or close to the forefront of TV technology ever since the good old Trinitron. Today the company went even further by introducing the first ever 240Hz LCD TV and the world's thinnest TV.

Hold your breath until December (in the US), because that's when Sony's 240Hz LCD TVs will be available to the public. Currently LCD TVs are topping out at 120Hz for consumers, and that's already a significant improvement in speed over the standard 50-60Hz of normal (for want of a better term) LCD TVs.

The new 240Hz technology promises to provide the smoothest, most lifelike, movement ever from an LCD TV and will be great for gamers using next-gen consoles especially. We're still a little concerned about 240Hz with movies though. As it is 120Hz makes TV and movies look a little fake.

The 240Hz technology will be available in the KDL-46W1 and KDL-40W1 that boasts full-HD, 3,000:1 contrast ratio, BRAVIA Engine 2 and 24p support.

This isn't the only big step forward from Sony though, they have also shown off the KDL-40ZX1 LCD TV that is just 9.9mm thick. It's not thin on features though. With BRAVIA Engine 2, 120Hz technology and 3,000:1 contrast ration, imagine having one of these bad boys in your room!

273w ago - Sony and Sharp have forged an alliance to help them meet the growing demand for liquid crystal display televisions.

Sony is to take a one-third stake in Sharp's $3.5bn (£1.8bn) LCD panel factory, which is due to be completed in March 2010.

Sony does not currently make the LCD panels for its flat-screen televisions, relying instead on a joint venture with South Korea's Samsung.

Sony shares rose more than 1% on the news, while Sharp closed unchanged.

Sony and Samsung branded televisions are competing for the number one spot in LCD sales, with Sharp trailing behind them.

Global sales of LCD televisions are expected to double to 155 million units by 2012, according to the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Association.
