Video: Gran Turismo 6 Out on PS3 Today, Kazunori on Lunar Racing

41w ago - Sony Blog Manager Fred Dutton announced that Gran Turismo 6 is officially out on PS3 today, with details from Kazunori on Lunar Racing.

To quote: Today, Gran Turismo 6 takes to the track. In keeping with the series' MO, Polyphony Digital has once again created an incredibly sophisticated and convincing racing simulation, which proudly wears the developer's unconditional love for the automobile on its sleeve.

And alongside the huge roster of new cars available to take for a spin, and the 37 tracks waiting to be mastered, Polyphony has thrown in something of a surprise. For the first time ever in a Gran Turismo title, you have the opportunity to swap the racing circuits of planet Earth for the Moon, and pilot a lunar rover across its surface. Hands up if you saw that coming?

"We had been working for a while on simulating the stars properly in the game, and the moon was being recreated very accurately. While we were working on that, the idea just came out of the blue," recalled Polyphony president and series creator Kazunori Yamauchi, when we caught up with him at the game's launch in Ronda, Spain, earlier this week.

"We thought, 'wouldn't it be interesting if you could drive on the surface of...

222w ago - Sony's Social Media Manager Jeff Rubenstein has shared a recent interview that James Gallagher conducted with Gran Turismo Creator Kazunori Yamauchi of Polyphony Digital.

To quote: With a November 2nd release date now on the horizon for Gran Turismo 5, our dashing European counterpart [Register or Login to view links] sat down with Polyphony Digital's [Register or Login to view links] yesterday.

While the new Gran Turismo 5 trailer at the SCEA E3 press conference was still fresh in the mind, a select few journalists were invited to a behind closed doors presentation from the father of GT, Kazunori Yamauchi, at the Los Angeles Conference Centre.

We were shown the Lounge feature, which gives every player a dedicated area to host their car collection and results, and the online lobbies where you and a group of friends can race, perform test laps, chat and watch other people driving. The floor then opened for questions with my favourite being when someone asked if Kazunori had visited every location used in the game.

"I have to be moved by something in one of my games so...

Kazunori Yamauchi Reveals New Gran Turismo 5 PS3 Details

254w ago - Autoweek.com (linked above) met with Gran Turismo creator and godfather Kazunori Yamauchi at SEMA and asked him several questions about the upcoming Gran Turismo 5 title for Sony's PS3 console.

To quote from the interview:

When will you release GT5?

Yamauchi: We will release it in March in Japan but for other regions, it has not been decided yet.

What's holding it up?

That's more depending on SCEA (Sony Computer Entertainment America) marketing decisions.

Have you spoken with those guys?

My job is to create the product, not sell it.

What's taking so long with the product, then?

From our perspective, it doesn't seem like that long a time. To make Gran Turismo 5, we threw away the legacy code from GT4 and started from scratch. It's been five years from [the release of] GT4, and that's the same amount of time it took to develop the first GT4. To create a game from scratch, that's the amount of time it takes to get it right.

You're at the SEMA show, what do you think?

Every time I come to SEMA, I can feel the passion of the car owners who bring their cars here. The SEMA show is different from what you see at a typical motor show. There is more passion...

Video: Interview with Polyphony Digital's Kazunori Yamauchi

272w ago - Sony's Social Media Manager Jeff Rubenstein has shared a video interview today with Polyphony Digital's Kazunori Yamauchi covering Gran Turismo for PSP.

To quote: Towards the end of E3, at the end of the next-to-last day, I got a call from SCEA San Diego colleague Scott Goryl. "Wanna talk to Kazunori?" he asked.

Chris and I ran from the LA Convention Center to the hotel suite, where I was able to jump in at the end of a long day of interviews with the producer of the Gran Turismo series. How much time did I get? Enough to ask 4 questions.

Now I've been sitting on this interview for about a month because I wanted you to be able to get some questions answered as well.

So now that you've seen the trailer and you know a few details (800+ cars!), what do you want to know about Gran Turismo PSP? The game's US producers will reply in a future post.

Gran Turismo: Not easy to develop on PS3, PSP GT put aside

50°
361w ago - The man behind the Gran Turismo series, Kazunori Yamauch (from Polyphony Digital) said when interviewed by Joystiq that it's not that easy to develop on PS3 that they've had to put GT for PSP aside a little bit. On the PSP version he said "we are still working on it, but this will be after GT5 on PS3."

Gran Turismo is also one of the few games that run at 1080p and 60fps, he said that this was a must have because when you're driving at high speeds you must be able to see detailed objects in the distance. He also said they had ideas for PSP interactivity with the PS3, most notable was that he thought it was possible for someone on the PSP to compete in the same race with someone on the PS3.

To quote from the interview: Interactivity between PSP and PS3. One of the examples they showed at E3 two years ago was the idea of a rear-view mirror in a racing game... *laughs* ...so that example probably not being the best application of the PSP, have you considered any other kind of PSP interactivity with the PS3 and GT5?

Well, one example would be for people to utilize replays of their race experience. Take that outside the home, whereas at home you would need the PS3, but they can take that away and share. Another would be - and we would need to do further research, we're just talking ideals...
