Yes folks, it's October, which means that the crazy end-of-year games rush has begun. A boggling number of games are due out over the next few months, so let us guide you towards the titles we really think you should be keeping an eye on.

Remember though, most of these recommendations are based on previews, so wait until the final review verdict before picking any of them up.

1. Animal Crossing: City Folk - Wii, 16th Nov US, December EU

It might not be the great hardcore hope Reggie claims it to be, but the Wii version of Animal Crossing certainly promises to be the definitive entry in the series. It's got proper online play, mic and keyboard communications, Mii support, a new city area full of customisable gear to pick up and connectivity between Wii and DS. In other words, it's got everything Animal Crossing always needed. AC is one of those games you either love or just don't get at all, but if you're the former, this will be a must. More »

The Japanese Association of Psychiatric Hospitals has reportedly asked InterChannel to pull the DS game Dementium: The Ward from distribution.

The game in question is a first person shooter that takes place in a psychiatric hospital in which various human science projects come after you and you must blow them away. The opposing group are concerned that the game may encourage prejudice against psychiatric patients.

To quote: The Japanese Association of Psychiatric Hospitals has reportedly asked Gamecock Media Group’s Interchannel to pull the Nintendo DS game "Dementium: The Ward" from distribution.

"Dementium" is a first person shooter that takes place in a -- you guessed it! -- Psychiatric Hospital where various human science projects come after you, and you BLOW THEM AWAY.

Association advocates claim they're concerned that the game will "encourage discrimination and prejudice" against psychiatric patients. Are they crazy?

Sorry PS3 gamers, but according to Treyarch and the people at Activision, the upcoming online multiplayer BETA for Call of Duty: World at War will be for XBox 360 and PC owners only.

For those of you who remember, Infinity Ward pulled a similar move last year by hosting the Call of Duty 4 BETA only on the XBox 360. After speaking with a Activision representative, I was told that the reasoning behind doing an XBox 360 and PC BETA was primarily due to increased server and connectivity data.

"We are running the BETA only on the XBox 360 and PC," said the representative. He continued then to point out that most BETAs on the PS3 are run by first party anyways, and if Treyarch runs their testing on the XBox 360 and PC they acquire more data on servers and connectivity.

Personally, I think that it's imperative to sufficiently test all networks a game will be running on, and that includes the PlayStation Network. Yes, if you were to run the BETA so... More »

Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith today confirmed that Call of Duty creator Infinity Ward, which most recently handled Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, will return to the franchise next year with Call of Duty 6.

"In 2009, we expect Infinity Ward to deliver another [entry of] ground-breaking quality, Call of Duty 6," Griffith stated at today's Activision Blizzard Analyst Day. Earlier this year, the CEO revealed that a new Call of Duty game would arrive in 2009, but did not offer any other details at the time.

Confusingly, Griffith's presentation today seemed to date CoD 6 for 2010 as well. After discussing Treyarch's Call of Duty: World at War, which he referred to as Call of Duty 5, the CEO said that "for calendar year 2010, Infinity Ward is already at work on the next installment in the franchise."

Following publisher Activision's "leapfrog strategy" of alternating developers, Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 6 will follow up Treyarch'... More »

A curious PC gamer has discovered a previously unseen mission in Call of Duty 4 - an extended training sequence that was dropped from the final game.

The find was reported by Infinity Ward's community chap Robert Bowling, and the video is below courtesy of aCoDModder. It shows what Infinity Ward originally had between the rifle range and the timed run through the mock house that the game uses to suggest a difficulty setting. An embarassingly low one, in my case.

Can't say the game suffers all that much for leaving it out, but it does answer one question for me: when I played, I really did wonder why they'd left that crappy-looking car outside the training building. Nice to know it was there for a reason... Enjoy!

According to Robert Bowling, Infinity Ward's director of communications, the team has an Xbox Live and PlayStation Network promotion in the pipeline for the weekend of September 13th. Exact details of the promotion haven't yet been revealed, but Bowling stated that double-experience points will be on offer for those itching to raise their in-game rank quickly.

More interesting, however, is the fact that Infinity Ward's developers are pushing hard to complete their new playlist updates in time for the promotion - making it all one-big promotion, says Bowling.

Should the team manage to get it done, and certified by both Microsoft and Sony, we could see some of the following playlists next weekend. Be aware, though, that Bowling has stated that the following list is far from final, and there's currently no telling what we'll receive.

The fifth chapter of the series Call of Duty, called World at War, is not even out yet and the sixth is already announced!

This is via Robert "Bobby" Kotick, the boss of Activision, which released the information during a conference call, referring to an exit in 2009 and development back at Infinity Ward.

We knew already that it would be held in the near future. Finally, this announcement is not surprising when one knows that CoD 4: Modern Warfare is their best-selling 2007 game.

If the publisher maintains this pace of one title per year, Call of Duty 50 should be released in 2053, and will put us in the shoes of a soldier of the Roman Empire during ancient times. :p
