When the 2.0 firmware update for PS3 was finally released, many users were disappointed over the fact that the update did not include in-game XMB access as originally expected.

The good news is that we still may see in-game XMB packed in a future firmware update according to Sony marketing VP Peter Dille, to quote from the link above:

As far as in-game XMB access, we know it’s a feature that’s important to our consumers. Because PS3 packs so much advanced technology "under the hood," it takes some time to implement major, new functionalities, but we are working hard on addressing this feature, as well as continually expand the capabilities and functionalities of PS3.

We expect firmware updates to continue in 2008 and throughout the product’s lifecycle as new technologies and enhancements become available.

Sony spokesperson Paul Purdy confirmed at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show that in-game XMB is coming to the PlayStation 3 this year, according to the source linked above.

The rep unfortunately would not pin a date or give a release timeline, but rest assured that the long-awaited feature is coming this year guys! :D

For those unaware, the PS3’s OS is unavailable while in games. This prevents the use of custom soundtracks or messenging while a game is active, and since the Xbox 360 offers its users both while in-game, PS3 owners have been justifiably frustrated.

sev1512 claims to have some insider access to a variety of news relating to PS3 Home and in-game XMB features. He says that PSedge dev kits released an update and the new Home libraries were introduced.

It is claimed that a game must be able to integrate into Home and a game must be able to support accomplishments. Moreover, every game that is coming out soon now supports in-game XMB and those already out will have to be patched. All in all Home is said to be very close as well as in-game XMB.

To quote: Anyways, very exciting stuff happened on Monday (The one that just past). The PSedge dev kits, recieved an update. So whatever, we take a look, and the major addition, was that the TRC's were updated, and the new HOME libraries were brought in.

What does this mean? A TRC is a checklist of things a game must have for Sony to approve, in order for them to give the "Go-Ahead" on releasing the game on their console. This checklist has things l... More »

According to Ray Maguire, the head of Sony Computer Entertainment’s UK operation, a feature labeled as in-game communication is due out this summer for the PlayStation 3, along with Firmware Update 2.4.

To quote: Our momentum will continue with the introduction of in-game communication in the summer, Firmware Update 2.4 and the strongest line-up of games through our third party partners and our own studios. I’d personally like to thank our trade and business partners for helping us on the start of the PS3 journey.

No further details were provided. However, we presume that this means PS3 owners will soon be able to chat with people on their PSN friends list while playing a game. A feature many of us have been waiting for.

Sony's UK boss Ray Maguire recently mentioned that in-game communication would be introduced to the PS3 this summer.

Daniel Dawkins, editor of PSM3 Magazine, has since said that this will bring the PS3 up to parity with X-Xox Live but that the key difference is that it’s free.

To quote: TechRadar spoke with Daniel Dawkins, editor of PSM3 Magazine, this morning who told us: “This brings the PS3 up to parity with Xbox Live, the key difference being that it’s free".

Dawkins added: “Sony is working its best to respond to what gamers want. The amount of evolution in terms of the firmware updates over the last year has been phenomenal.”

TechRadar also spoke with Sony Computer Entertainment reps this morning. They informed us that they were currently not making any official announcements or issuing any further information on exactly how in-game comms on PS3 are set to be improved.

According to rumors in the PSM3 magazine, we are going to have to wait a few months to see in game XMB. The magazine also states that Sony may soon make a big announcement about Home, that will reveal achievements to rival the Xbox live system.

Update: Apparently this isn't anything 'new' as PS3 online users are also reporting Army of Two, Burnout Paradise, and Rainbow Six Vegas 2 have an In-Game Friends List as well as Resistance for well over a year now.

Watchful reader StevieK08 has alerted us to the fact that the new Haze Demo has an in games friend list. To see it, get to the main menu, hit triangle once, triangle a second time, and voila!, up pops the friends list.

We have not had a chance to verify but Steve attached a screen shot that appears to confirm his story. If you have the demo, please give it a try and let us know. Thanks!

In-Game communication has become an important feature to console gamers. The expansion of online gameplay is a huge part of it. When the PS3 was first announced, many wondered if it would come with features such as in-game communication and custom soundtracks.

To the sadness of many, it did not. Why? Because Sony did something that the other console did not, leave it in the hands of the Developers. This will not be an article bashing developers or cursing Sony. It will simply explain my views on the subject.

Let me start off first by saying that I have no need for in-game communication or custom soundtracks. Why? Because I can simply mute my television to hear the music that I want or send a text message to someone that I really want to talk to. The majority of the individuals on my friend list are people that I have never spoken to or even played a game with.

Amazing? No, I seem to find that to be quite common with many gamers. I also enjoy the... More »

According to Jim Cordeira over at Gaming-Age, the long-awaited Firmware 2.4 update for PlayStation 3 will hit later this summer, complete with a universal friends list and In-Game XMB functionality.

While Sony has yet to comment, it's no secret that a major firmware release is due out soon. Back in March, SCEE UK head Ray Maguire made mention of 2.4, but did not provide specifics - aside from confirming that the update would hit in the summer and include “In-Game communication.”

An EA employee who goes by the alias of “evilone” on NeoGAF gave credence to Jim’s report, noting that “there is more then just In-Game XMB coming in 2.40.”

Until it's release, we're still filing this as a rumor, but there is a good chance it's legit... time will tell for sure.
