Rumor: PS1 / PS2 Games Heading to PlayStation 4 / PS4 via Emulation

400°
38w ago - Today Eurogamer (linked above) reports on rumors of PS1 / PS2 games heading to PlayStation 4 / PS4 via emulation with details below.

To quote: Backwards compatibility is coming to PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Now is only part of the story. A well-placed source working with Sony's streaming service reveals that only PlayStation 3 titles are currently scheduled to use the "gameplay over IP" cloud service. PS1 and PS2 titles are set to follow the more conventional route of running locally under emulation on Sony's latest console - but with the possibility of HD visual enhancements.

While Sony effectively phased out hardware emulation of previous platforms during the early stages of the PS3 era, it has worked consistently on opening up the PlayStation back catalogue to publishers via software emulation and PSN downloads.

Internally, PlayStation 3's firmware contains emulators for PS1, PS2 and even the handheld PSP, while Vita is capable of running PS1 and Vita titles virtually flawlessly using the same technology. In short, there's a proven codebase that can only get better for the vastly more powerful PS4.

Our information suggests that the same internal emulator strategy is planned for PlayStation 4, and we understand that Sony is actively pursuing the ability for older titles to...

Atlus Announces Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time Heading to PSP

100°
143w ago - Today Atlus Manager of Public Relations and Sales Aram Jabbari has announced that Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time is officially heading to the PSP.

To quote: It's been years since the last Growlanser game, dearest members of the Blog of PlayStation ([Register or Login to view links], for those of you playing "PlayStation Blog: The At-Home Edition," was released for PS2 back in 2007).

Even before that, hardcore RPG fans have been clamoring for the fourth entry, one of their favorites in the series, to make its way to North America. Now, there are always factors for games released in Japan to either never come or come much, much later to US shores. This was one of those cases where hope seemed quite faint.

Just this past week, those hopes were given a prescription-strength injection of horse steroids as Atlus (that's us) officially announced Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time, the enhanced PSP version of the long-beloved and much-requested fourth chapter in the popular series of RPGs, for release this summer in North America.

Let's tune out all those exclamations of shock that ATLUS is releasing a PSP game in 2012 (because it isn't going to be the only one) and get to the heart of the matter: telling you everything you need...

Video: Sega Confirms Yakuza: Dead Souls PS3 Heading to the US

300°
159w ago - Sega of America Associate Brand Manager Aaron Webber has confirmed today alongside a video trailer that Yakuza: Dead Souls on PS3 is heading to the US.

To quote: Greetings Sony fans and Yakuza enthusiasts! Today is an exciting day, both for PS3 gamers and for us here at SEGA - the PS3 exclusive, Yakuza: Dead Souls is coming to the west!

It seems like only yesterday we were all sitting on the edge of our Sony-branded seats, hoping desperately that Yakuza 3 would see the light of day overseas. In the years since, we've seen not only the US release of Yakuza 3, but Yakuza 4, too - and, thanks to the fantastic support of fans and PS3 gamers like you, we're proud to now announce the latest chapter in the Yakuza franchise. What was once Of The End is now Dead Souls!

So, what is Yakuza: Dead Souls all about? I traveled to the top of the mountains and spent two weeks meditating to bring you the answers. In the end, that failed, so I just played the entire game instead.

It was awesome, and in doing so, I found that this game is a mix of:

• Zombies in Tokyo
• Yakuza with guns
• Beautiful Hostesses

And while I'm not able to reveal how much content from the Japanese version is coming over,...

Video: Renegade Ops Upgrades Heading to PlayStation Network

50°
167w ago - Sega Brand Manager Ken Balough has shared a details and a video today on the Renegade Ops Upgrades which will soon be heading to PlayStation Network.

To quote: I wanted to drop by with more information about our PSN PLAY-bound title Renegade Ops, focusing on upgrades you'll use to enhance your chosen vehicle.

The upgrades are there to help you tailor your character to your preferred play style... though all four characters can be played balls-to-the-wall, and you're never going to have enough time to sit back and take in the gorgeous scenery for long.

First though, allow me to give you the first exclusive look at the latest trailer which surprisingly enough shows off some of these upgrades.

The better you are at the game - in other words the more enemies you destroy, stunts you pull and collectibles you grab - the quicker you'll reach the next level, and in this game levels mean prizes... well, upgrade points. So, how can you spend these points?

Well you'll have the choice of three skill trees to spread your points over, so you can customise your character depending on how you best play the game. The only limit to this is the amount of upgrades you can have active at one time; the higher your level, the more...
