The world's most popular games console is being upgraded. Japanese games giant Nintendo is developing a high-definition model of its Wii console, which has sold more than 30 million units globally.

Though no official announcement has yet been made despite numerous rumors, games developers in Japan have been given top secret briefings on the next-generation console, thought to be named Wii HD.

The new console will support high-definition graphics, bringing it in line with Sony's PS3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360 and will likely debut in late 2011.

The Wii HD is also rumored to feature a high-capacity hard drive for the storage and streaming of digital content such as music and video. Meanwhile, Nintendo has unveiled its new hand-held games machine, the DSi.

A successor to the company's hit Nintendo DS portable games unit (pictured left), the ne... More »

Multiple sources, including WhatTheyPlay.com (linked above), are reporting that Nintendo is currently showing early presentations of its next home console hardware.

It will apparently launch by 2011 and has been dubbed the "Wii HD". High definition visuals are assured, as is a greater emphasis on digitally distributed and backwardly compatible content, indicating that the new system will feature some form of local storage medium such as a hard drive or large flash memory solution.

It has also been indicated that Nintendo’s emphasis is again on what the consumer will hold in their hands and interact with, rather than the “console” itself.

To quote: There is no indication if this will be its eventual name, but the nature of the transition has been characterized as similar to “the shift from Game Boy to Game Boy Advance,” where familiar, key elements were left intact while the core hardware was made more powerful.

Several have reported on the official UK PlayStation forum (linked above) that they are experiencing random crashes and freezing issues with the recently released WipEout HD.

Based on user feedback thus far, the bug appears to be affecting only those with too many people (50+) on their PSN friends list. SCEE Community Team Leader MusterBuster stated that Sony is looking into the issue, however, some are reporting possible "fixes" until an official update or patch is made available.

To quote lowrider007: Well, for me anyway, I can now play signed into PSN and no freezes, I updated my firmware to 2.43 and it seems to be fine now, I've had it on for about 3 hours now and it's the first time it hasn't locked up at all, strange that should fix my issue, perhaps their was a glitch in my last FW update for something.

To quote D-E-V-I-L-08: Listen carfully...

Yesterday Apple introduced HD TV downloads to the iTunes store, meaning you can watch Peter be super emo on Heroes at a crispy 720p resolution. That's a higher resolution than DVD, and technically, yup, that's HD. There's a catch though. Like every other video download service touting HD videos, it's all actually lower quality than DVD.

It's all about bitrate: How much data is packed into a file, described as bits per second. Generally speaking, a higher bitrate translates into higher quality audio and video, though quality can also be affected by codec—the encoding and compression technique that was used to make and read the file—so bitrate is not an absolute mark of quality, but it's still a very good indicator.

You're probably most familiar with this bitrate business when it comes to ripping your CDs. When you shove a CD into your computer, your rippi... More »

TimeSplitters 4 details have been few and far between since its official reveal, but the folks at PSM3 (PlayStation 3 Magazine) have snagged a few details on the upcoming shooter.

According to Derek Littlewood of Free Radical, TimeSplitters 4 won't utilize the heavily-criticized Haze graphics engine. Instead, Free Radical opted for some "new and double shiny tech."

While this all sounds good, the game is still early on in the development cycle, and won't see the light of day for a while. What may come a bit sooner, if PSM3 is to be believed, is a TimeSplitters 2 remake in HD, which would most likely be released on the PlayStation Network.

It would certainly get folks excited about the new TimeSplitters, that's for sure.

A few months ago an XBox 360 BenQ (Lite-On) drive DG-16D2S FW 74850C was discovered. Some feared it could mark the end of flashable drives, and that Microsoft would have the sense to make the firmware unflashable in a new drive revision after their efforts with the v79 Hitachi drives.

If the key could be read, however, you could simply swap to an exploitable drive.

It now appears Geremia over at XBoxHacker.net (linked above) has finally managed to retrieve the DVD key from a Lite-On DVD drive!

To quote: Much respect and thanks to Tiros, Schtrom, TMF, Redline99, it's always a pleasure to talk with you.

Picture below, cool news for XBox 360 fans indeed ;)
