Sony announced in a press release on Wednesday that the newly updated PSP 2000 is in stores now from $169.

PSP "Slim" (or 2000 as it's officially called) in stores now
The revamped units, first unveiled at E3 2007, are 33 percent lighter and 19 percent slimmer than original models. HD video and audio out have been added in addition to optimized memory for reduced loading times.

"PSP sales have soared since we introduced the $169.99 price point in April, and that momentum will only continue with the launch of the newly designed PSP," said Jack Tretton, president of Sony Computer Entertainment of America amid criticisms that the handheld lacks compelling software.

The redesigned PSP comes in three models; Piano Black for $169, a Ceramic White Star Wars bundle for $199, and the Ice Silver Daxter Entertainment bundle for $199.

An estimated 23 million PSP units have been sold worldwide compared to 49 million DS units.

DFC predicts the game industry as a whole could generate $47 billion that year.
According to a series of recent reports by the research group DFC Intelligence, the game industry is poised to see enormous overall growth in 2009, just in time for the Xbox 360 to slip to a distant third place in the console race.

DFC estimates that the videogame market will swell to $47 billion by 2009, a 42 percent increase over the $33 billion generated by the industry in 2006. That forecast includes revenue from videogame hardware and software, dedicated portable system hardware and software (i.e. the DS and PSP - not mobile phones), PC games, and online PC and console games.

But the Xbox 360's selling power could be on the wane, according to DFC's research. The company has raised its forecast for the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3 and lowered its forecast for Microsoft's console, predicting that the Wii will stay on top at least through 2008 and that the PS3 will move i... As expected, Hideo Kojima came packing a brand-new trailer for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, one that's much more story-oriented -- including the re-introduction of Metal Gear Ray and Rex -- than ever before. Kojima stuck behind the early 2008 release date for his latest sequel, and users interested in remaining pure for his "last" installment in the series will probably want to avoid the new trailer.

Additionally, Kojima confirmed MGS4 will come bundled with a Metal Gear Online "starter pack," but declined to specify what exactly that includes. That wasn't all for the Metal Gear universe, either, as a new trailer rolled for Metal Gear Portable Ops Plus, which apparently so... More »

On the fourth floor of Sony's Japanese offices in the posh district of Minato-ku, the PlayStation 3-maker held a party Wednesday night to show off 30 of the PS3's upcoming games to an audience of international journalists.

The company remained tight-lipped about what to expect in tomorrow's Sony Computer Entertainment keynote, which starts at 10:30 a.m. Tokyo time on Thursday (2:30 a.m. BST Thursday, 6:30 p.m. PDT Wednesday). However, speculation is widespread that SCEI CEO Kaz Hirai will use his presentation to unveil a rumble-enabled Dual Shock 3 for the PS3, amongst other announcements.

At tonight's event, though, the atmosphere was informal. Informal enough, in fact, for GameSpot to corner Sony Worldwide Studios president and World's #1 MotorStorm fan Phil Harrison over a cold drink. He politely discussed the constant comparisons of the PS3 and Wii, and how Sony plans to move on from the negative... More »

It must be in the water -- the Japanese love handheld remakes. According to Enterbrain, Sony sold 250,000 units of the new PSP (also called PSP-2000) in just four days since first available in Japan on Sept. 20.

Over the past two years the DS Lite, also a remake, has consistently been sold out in Japan due to high demand.

Sony released the original PSP shortly after the release of the Nintendo DS. Having sold initially well, PSP sales have slowed when compared to the hot-selling Nintendo DS, which outsells Sony's portable on average of 2 to 1.

The new PSP, coupled with a five percent price drop in Japan, allowed Sony to match in four days what it had sold in the previous two months with the original PSP.

Today in New York City, HP revealed "for the first time outside of the lab" a concept handheld for the company's Mediascape (or "Mscape") gaming software. The handheld has been sighted before, though — specifically in an HP commercial shown earlier this year at a technology summit. Here is the video:

As seen in the video, the concept with Mscape is that the handheld's screen acts kind of like a lens through which the real world is rendered just like a video game. For example, holding it up to a part of the street may reveal a virtual crater where the ground should be. It's not actually rendering the environment in real time; Mscape cues up the proper graphics when prompted by sensors on the device, including GPS. It's so far been confined to HP's iPAQ handhelds.

That could change, however, if this prototype device ever goes into production. HP gave no hint about when that might happen, not even giving the name of t... More »

Within five years, the RPG maker wants three out of every four dollars it earns to come from outside Japan.

Last week the Financial Times said Japanese role-playing game publisher Square Enix is looking for publishing allies in the US and Europe to help boost the amount of revenues it derives from foreign markets. According to the article, foreign sales accounted for no more than 20 percent of the company's revenues, and the Final Fantasy publisher was hoping to make it 50 percent within three years.

Square Enix president Yoichi Wada today issued a statement contradicting that report. He said that the company already gets half of its revenues internationally, and wants to boost that even more.

"It is crucial for us to expand our businesses on a global basis," Wada said. "Given the fact that the size of overseas markets is now more than three times as large as the domestic market, we recognize numerous growth opportunities. Our strategy to seize ... More »

Back in June we mentioned that the PSP was getting a new accessory – the Go!Cam. We’ll we managed to get our hands on one to put it through the Varsity ‘hot or not’ test. Read on to find out how we got on…

The Go!Cam allows PSP owners to seamlessly turn your handheld into a functional and fun camera. The camera simply screws onto the top of the console and can swivel around 180 degress so that you’re not only filming yourself. It also offers a built in microphone for picking up audio of course. There’s also a hand plastic case to keep the attachment protected which is good as the build quality is on the lighter side.

It comes packaged with very basic instructions and without software. In place a URL is provided for you to go download the Go!Edit software which allows you to do any editing. Using Go!Edit I was able to successfully enhance videos and pics adding in sounds and special effects. Now this isn’t ever going to replace Adobe Premi... More »

GamesIndustry.biz has learned that Sony Computer Entertainment America is developing at least seven new PlayStation Portable games for download via the PlayStation Store.

The service – currently only available to PlayStation 3 users – is due to launch for the PSP and PC next year and will offer users an alternative portfolio of titles to those currently available on UMD game discs.

Sony will offer multiple content to PSP users via the PlayStation Store, including original games, classic PSone titles, demos for UMD-based and downloadable games, additional content for released games and TV content such as trailers, behind-the-scenes clips and interviews.

A source close to SCEA has revealed that three action games, two music-based games, one racing title and a shooting game are being developed internally.

Downloadable games for the handheld will be between one half and one third of the size of the average UMD title, offering between ... More »

Kotaku's mention of the return of The Official PlayStation Magazine with a new name, PlayStation: The Official Magazine, a couple of weeks ago, what I didn't see is that it's going to replace PSM, the independent PlayStation magazine. Issue 130 of PSM arrived at my door today telling me so, even letting me know that at least the first new PTOM will ship with a Blu-ray disc of demos.

Ah of course, a physical disc of demos bundled with a paper-based magazine, that's exactly what the PlayStation 3 needs. If only the console had a high-speed digital distribution system for getting demos into the hands of end-users without having to buy a physical magazine and disc. If only it had a web browser built in that could show web content like a monthly web magazine and can even download audio and video files to, I don't know, a hard drive built in standard? And what about a handheld that had a web browser and cheap flash storage that could accept downloads of audio and video files, wo... More »
