There are two versions of Sony's upcoming real driving simulator Gran Turismo 5 Prologue here at the 2007 Leipzig Games Convention, though it's probably fairer to call them slightly different aspects of the same game. In fact, if you want to be entirely accurate, you could say that there are actually three versions of the Gran Turismo series, if you count the downloadable Gran Turismo demo that's currently available on the PlayStation Network. Nonetheless, as we were roaming the massive Sony space in Hall 3 of the Leipziger Messe in search of all things Gran Turismo, our focus was on the two versions of Prologue.

The first version featured eight racing cabinets set up to show off the game in the way a game like this is supposed to be played: with racing seats (which proved to be nearly too narrow for our frame), a full HD screen, and a Logitech wheel-and-pedal setup. The featured track was Japan's Suzuka circuit, and the game presented us with a roster of 22 cars to choos... More »

Karraker called the decision "very difficult" having been presented with a promotion closer to home in an industry he had previously worked in.

"I have enjoyed immensely my tenure at SCEA and think the company and its brands are very well positioned to have an exceptional holiday and a very bright future," he wrote in an email to the media. "I look forward to continuing to follow this industry as a gamer, rather than a spokesperson."

Analyst Michael Pachter called the outgoing public relations director a "steady contact in a volatile industry."

Karraker played a key role in helping Sony brave the public relation waters of a tumultuous PS3 launch year by making himself readily available to both traditional and new media outlets. It was a position that we called the toughest job in video games this past May.

"The other PR people at Sony are quite competent, but it would help to strengthen the team with someone as good as Dave to handle ... More »

Gran Turismo HD was initially intended as a limited time Christmas present of sorts for early PlayStation 3 adopters, but some nine months later, the free download is still available via the PlayStation Store. However, with Gran Turismo 5: Prologue on the horizon, Gran Turismo HD's days appear to be numbered -- at least in Japan.

GameLife reports that Sony will remove the title from the PlayStation Store in Japan this Sunday, September 30th. No word yet on whether the North American version of Gran Turismo HD will suffer the same fate, but we recommend downloading it immediately (wherever you are) if you haven't already. Along with the removal, the Japanese Gran Turismo website will no longer track rankings for the title, though the in-game leaderboards will continue to function.

A Sony Computer Entertainment spokesperson has confirmed to Level Up that sometime later this month, retailers will begin selling a $39.99 SKU of Warhawk that does not include the Bluetooth headset. When the game went on sale in August, two versions were available: a download-only version sold through the Playstation Network for $39.99, and Blu-Ray disc version with a Jabra Bluetooth headset packed in, for $59.99. With this price reduction, the retail and digitally distributed versions of Warhawk now sell for the same price.

We first got wind of a possible stripped down retail SKU for Warhawk on Friday, when, in the course of reporting a separate story, we came across a listing for "Warhawk--Game Only" on GameStop's Web site. The listing says that the $39.99 version will be available on October 10th, but the Sony rep had not been able to confirm that with SCEA's sales department by press time. When asked whether this was indicative of Sony's strategy for future AAA games t... More »

Big news from the world of Gran Turismo. With the Tokyo Motor Show only a week away, Sony is already prepping for a huge unveiling on October 24th. There are rumors around what Sony could possibly be revealing, but for now the more important news at hand is the fact that GT5 Prologue will be a downloadable demo as of October 20th. That's right, a free download. That explains why Gran Turismo HD was removed from the PlayStation store on September 30th.

Chances are that this is the same demo shown at Tokyo Game Show (TGS). Most of you who didn't attent TGS will be able to see calendar and other functions in the new Prologue. If that's the case and the Prologue demo is the same one shown at the video game show last month, this upcoming download should feature Alfa Romeos, Nissans, Ferarris and other vehicles, a total of 16, as well as three tracks, Suzuka, Fuji and Daytona.

The October 24th downloadable demo of Prologue should hold fans over long enough until the... More »
