First of all, readers of our Forums know (with the assistance of our Members) we have recently been doing research into the PS3 RCO file format.
Note that it is different than that on a PSP, however, contains similarities as well. We have received a few questions as to "why" we want to examine the files... it's for a few reasons. First off- We are all curious! Secondly, the RCO files, in support with other files, enable/disable "links" to PS3 XMB options.
In related news, we have now accessed the PS3 Flash's FileSystem, and among other things (to be posted in Part 2 or 3 of this article) it contains a folder called "ps1emu".
What is it for? We found out! Inside the ps1emu folder, upon the insertion of a PS2 disc, a file is copied there by the name of "ps1_rom.bin". Oddly enough, it is actually the custom made PS2's BIOS for th... More »
SlySoft has released v6.4.0.0 if its AnyDVD HD software, which means it can now remove BD+ protection from Blu-ray discs.
The release also has some other upgrades and bug fixes as follows:
- New (Blu-ray): Removes the BD+ protection from Blu-ray discs! (for increased compatibility with titles released by Twentieth Century Fox :-))
- New (Blu-ray): Added option to enable / disable BD+ removal
- New (DVD): AnyDVD ripper no longer uses the Windows filesystem, it has now its own UDF parser / reader. Discs which cannot be read by Windows can now be copied with the AnyDVD ripper.
- Fix (Blu-ray): Black display with some BD discs, e.g., "Layer Cake", second release, "The Fugitive", "Wild Things" (all Region B)
- Fix (DVD): Small bugfix in "repairing defective disc structure" function of AnyDVD ripper
- Fix (DVD): Problems with some Arccos protected titles, e.g. "The Grudge", R1, US

The Ubuntu development community has announced that the fifth Ubuntu 8.04 prerelease is now available for testing. Ubuntu 8.04 alpha 5 adds additional polish and reliability as well as a few intriguing new features. The official release of Ubuntu 8.04, codenamed Hardy Heron, is scheduled for late April and feature freeze is already in effect.
We tested alpha 5 to get a first look at the new features in action and to see how it compares to alpha 4, which we reviewed earlier this month. Ubuntu 8.04 includes a new sound server called PulseAudio, the new GIO and GVFS I/O abstraction layer and virtual filesystem mechanisms, the PolicyKit secure privilege escalation framework, improved support for virtualization, and a new VNC client. Integration of these features is moving forward steadily and GVFS has become a bit more robust.
One of the most significant new features added in alpha 5 is support for Wubi, a new installation mechanism that makes it easier for Ubun... More »
Update: Following the release of CFW 3.80/3.90 M33, some users experienced lag when loading compressed files and plug-ins from the memory stick. The patch below allows users to load the original 3.71 fatms driver on 3.80 and 3.90 M33 series Firmware to resolve this issue.
Note that while this patch will increase memory stick read speed, the 3.71 fatms driver will require use of more kernel memory.
Dark_AleX has released an update to PSP Custom Firmware 3.90 M33. The update features numerous improvements in plug-in loading code, notably fixing issues related with loading plug-ins on slow memory sticks.
We have been receiving some questions from the curious such as "What does the PS3's Hard Disk Filesystem look like?"
Below is a file list off the hard disk, although some directories are still inaccessible, we would like to share them with you.
The BCUS98107 entry is that of Resistance: Fall of Man, and its files are cache files copied to the HDD. Also, there is a pic of the debug controller lit up below.

Another brief update based on the yesterday's findings: the PS3 Flash is quite accessible as the majority of it is mounted inside the PS3 as a filesystem (think PSP), and is able to be read/written.
A picture is below for a peek at a partial filelist. As you can see there are quite a few sprx's. These are encrypted of course, however they function quite the same as their PSP counterparts. For the majority of the PS3 OS's functions, there is a sprx that is tasked to do the job.
For the big chunk of interesting news: Every single scene release ever released for PS3 will not work without being patched.
Why? It is because backup PS3 images lack some data that we will call a key. On an original, when the disc is inserted, the PS3 reads the key, and it is used to decrypt any encrypted files on disc (the DISC layer of encryption). On a backup, the PS3 can not read this key so it will not be able to decrypt the file. Of course if a hardware mod surface... More »
