PS JailBreak Mod Code Sniffed via USB, Logged and Examined

1300°
222w ago - A few days ago PS JailBreak was reverse-engineered, and today Descrambler sniffed the USB traffic and shared the log.

I don't know that much about the USB protocol, but I think this is what happens:

• The PSJailbreak is inserted
• It connects with the host (PS3) and sends 09 02 12 00 01 00 00 80 + all the bytes from the first packet starting at 0008 up to 00EFF.
• The stack is overwritten and the PS3 jumps into code from the packet
• The Atmega sends a "USB Disconnect command"
• The last three steps are repeated four times

• It connects with the host and sends 09 02 4D 0A 01 01 00 80 + the bytes from the second packet starting at 0008 up to 0A4C
• The stack is overwritten and the PS3 jumps into code from the packet
• The Atmega sends a "USB Disconnect command"
• The last three steps are repeated twice.

Voilà... The PS3 is in "Debug Mode".

Apparently the third and fourth byte of the after the 09 02 are the numbers of bytes to be sent. At least this goes for the second log (4D 0A->0A4D bytes)...

The first 8 bytes are from the usb protocol left [09 02 ... ]

The code will be...

PS3 TOOL DECR-1000A Serial Port Examined - Part 1

500°
256w ago - Today we have a brief update on the PS3 TOOL DECR-1000A serial port, as I haven't had time yet (due to the holidays) to install my [Register or Login to view links] into our Service Mode PS3 to begin dumping and comparing the NAND images.

Not long ago we took a peek at the PS3 Reference Tool's serial port, which is a 9 pin RS-232 port is covered by a metal panel, with two screws holding it down. One would assume there are secrets behind it, we did!

On connecting to the unit, we received a prompt for a password. On a whim, we tried a few default passwords, one of which being Administrator, and it worked!

We then received the prompt shown in the picture (below). Alas, there are only a few options to set the IP address on the unit. It can either be set statically, or dynamically - letting the IP be obtained by a network DHCP server.

The version command returns the software version of the PS3 Communication Processor, which as we detailed previously, is the embedded debugger in the PS3 TOOL.

The IP settings as well are that of the embedded debugger....

The Rise of the Video Game Console Cheat Examined

250°
293w ago - Chances are you probably know someone who cheats online. Perhaps you've even strayed to the dark side. Previously the realm of the PC gamer, online cheating seems to have transitioned successfully over to consoles. But can anything be done about it?

When people think of cheating in console video games, often their first thought is of some desperate individual frantically hitting button combos on a controllers in an attempt to unlock some godly weapon combination that will blow the competition out of the water.

Being an avid Xbox 360 gamer, and playing considerable hours online on what I naively thought was a closed platform (and therefore supposedly safe from the abusive traits of a cheater) little did I know that my innocent haven could be disrupted by an unruly force, hell-bent on winning at any cost. It seems that no matter the system, someone always has to ruin the fun for everyone else by exploiting otherwise honest game mechanics.

The problem seems to lie partly in the ranking systems that many games nurture in an effort to encourage players to game long into the night. Some of our gaming fraternity will do anything to achieve that elusive rank. Personally, that's never really been my focus, and perhaps this is why the repulsive behaviour of the few strikes such a chord.
