Uncharted 2 for PS3 Dubbed GamesCom's Best Console Game!

50°
277w ago - Naughty Dog's Senior Manager of Marketing Communications Arne Meyer has announced today that Uncharted 2 for PS3 was dubbed GamesCom's best console game.

To quote: Just last week, one of our Senior Character Artists, Hanno, and I hopped on a plane to head over to Cologne, Germany, to work at Europe's biggest videogames show, Gamescom. It turns out that we absolutely had no idea what we were getting ourselves into.

This was the first European show for Hanno and myself, as we had never been to the Leipzig Games Convention in the previous years. We weren't prepared at all on how huge gamescom was - not only in importance, but in sheer physical size.

There were four different halls at the Koelnmesse where games were being shown and EACH hall was about the same size of an airplane hangar. The PlayStation booth was probably one of the biggest booths we've ever seen and was split into four main sections representing racing games, family games, social entertainment and an 18+ area.

We were looking forward to going to Germany since we were hand-carrying over something really special with us - a fresh set of Blu-ray disks that would allow anyone at gamescom to have the first hands-on gameplay ever with the single player campaign of UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves!

Gran Turismo Has Competition Dubbed Need for Speed: Shift

550°
302w ago - For years the Gran Turismo franchise has been the king of driving simulators. From it's days on the PlayStation to it's last release Gran Turismo 5: Prologue.

It has usually been the best looking driving game on the market and the most realistic driving expierence for racing fans. Though the guys at EA, and Slightly Mad Studios have a game that's coming for Gran Turismo's crown.

The game is Need for Speed: Shift. Now over the past couple of years, the recent Need for Speed's have continually gotten worse and worse, but the guys at Slightly Mad Studio plan to change that trend. Members of the development team once worked at Simbin Studios, and worked on the GT Legends and GTR2 games.

The guys at Slightly Mad are taking this game in a slightly new direction. Instead of focusing on the street racing aspect that made Need for Speed famous, Shift is going towards a more realistic driving expierence; as seen in Forza and Gran Turismo.

The game is beautiful. This game will easily challenge Gran Turismo 5 as the most beautiful racing game when they both come out. In Shift, the driver will have an effective rear view mirror while in the cockpit view. You will even be able to see the reflection of opponents cars on your hood.

Unlike Gran Turismo, in Shift your cars...

Microsoft's Own 'LittleBigPlanet' Dubbed Kodu to Launch in Spring

50°
311w ago - It has been confirmed that Kodu will hit the Xbox 360 in the Spring. This is a piece of software designed to assist anyone even as young as 7 to create their own video games.

To quote: The idea of video game players making their own games arrived on console systems three months ago with Sony's release of LittleBigPlanet for the PlayStation 3. That game let players create new environments and levels for the game's character SackBoy.

Kodu is also expected to have some online sharing features if privacy concerns can be addressed properly, says lead designer Matt MacLaurin. And Kodu, because it is more programming-based, will give designers more control over the rules that govern the characters in their games.

"Although these are programming constructs, we tried to express them in terms that almost a toddler can understand," he says. Learning is at the heart of Kodu. At home one night, MacLaurin says he "started thinking what is my (four-year-old) daughter going to think computers are for and what is she going to think her own abilities in regard to the computer are."

He decided to create a simple game creation program that "you could sit down and start creating right away and play in half an hour have something that is really fun to play with," he says.
