First Look: Driveclub's Dynamic Weather in Action on PlayStation 4

50°
3w ago - Sony Blog Manager Fred Dutton shared a first look today at Driveclub's dynamic weather in action on PlayStation 4 alongside an interview below.

To quote: Evolution Studios took the wraps off Driveclub's dynamic weather system at E3 in Los Angeles last month and we were there to see it demoed live.

Today we've got some new direct feed gameplay clips of the dynamic weather in action and an interview from the game's Art Director Alex Perkins. This is all from an early demo of the game's realistic - and fully customizable - weather system that will be included in Driveclub as a free update for all players just shortly after launch.

We're really excited to give you an early look at how wind, rain, snow and everything in between can affect your races and how you can customize it in your challenges. Take a look at the new videos, then keep reading to catch up with what we've learned from our interview with Alex.

How have you approached weather in Driveclub?

Alex Perkins: We've approached our weather system with the same guiding principles as we've done with everything in Driveclub: to make it as immersive and fun as possible. We've developed a powerful engine that has the capability to model the entire environment in stunning detail; from each cloud that...

Sony Shares 51 Details About DriveClub PS4 on PlayStation 4

8w ago - Sony Blog Manager Fred Dutton shared 51 details about DriveClub PS4 on PlayStation 4 below today!

To quote: As you might have noticed in recent trailers, Evolution Studios' forthcoming PS4 racer Driveclub really is a looker.

But until you see it up close it's hard to appreciate just how much effort the team has gone to ensure it really pushes at the boundaries of gamers' expectations.

During a recent studio visit I was treated to anecdote after eyebrow-raising anecdote, from key team members about just how detailed this game is. Duly, to shine a light on the extraordinary work that's currently underway up in Runcorn, Cheshire, I collated as many as I could note down into the list below.

Take a look and keep in mind this is only scratching the surface - Evolution still has months of development left and are adding new elements every day.

Weather

1. NASA data was used to accurately map out the night sky - so wherever you are in the world you'll see the correct star constellations for your location.

2. If you're lucky, you'll get to see the northern lights - it's possible to see the aurora borealis from the northern tracks in Norway, Scotland, and Canada.

3. All clouds are full 3D models to ensure accurate light diffusion...

Video: How DriveClub Aims to Make Rage-quitting Extinct on PS4

50°
8w ago - Sony Blog Manager Fred Dutton outlined how they plan to make rage-quitting extinct in DriveClub DriveClub on PS4 today.

To quote: We've all been there. You're tearing round the last lap in, say, Gran Turismo or Need For Speed, defending a narrow lead over the chasing pack, when your concentration slips for a second and you find your car buried in a hedge.

With the race all but lost and any rewards snatched away, it's understandable that throwing a quick tantrum and furiously jabbing Options > Quit Race can be an instinctive reaction.

The racing game rage-quit is a real conundrum for designers - not only does it rip you out of the game and compromise your enjoyment, but it also inhibits the integrity of the online multiplayer experience. Duly, it's an obstacle that Evolution Studios is tackling head on in DRIVECLUB on PS4.

"I like the idea that that you don't have to be in first place," explained Game Director Paul Rustchynsky when we stopped by the studio last week. "I want everybody to enjoy the thrill of racing."

"I play a lot of racing games and I'm a pretty good driver, but I'm not always the guy who's in first place. I like to have fun and take risks, rather than obsess about perfecting every single corner. The problem for drivers like me, and I think we're...

DriveClub PS4 Could Be Most Realistic Sounding Racing Game Ever

50°
9w ago - Sony Blog Manager Fred Dutton proclaimed today that DriveClub on PS4 could be the most realistic sounding racing game ever!

To quote: If you've been keeping track of our recent DRIVECLUB videos - in particular the 4TheSense clip above - you should hopefully have twigged that developer Evolution Studios is hell-bent on delivering the most technically sophisticated console driving game on the market.

Its visuals and gameplay systems obviously play a huge part in achieving that goal, but there's another, less-trumpeted area in which the team are achieving some extraordinary things: audio.

Squirreled away in a corner of the sprawling Evolution complex outside Runcorn in the north of England, Audio Manager Alan McDermott and his team have been hard at work building an enormous library of sound effects for the forthcoming PS4 racer. And unlike most games in the genre, every single one of them is 100% bespoke.

"We did initially look and see if we could buy samples in, and approached manufacturers," McDermott tells me. "But it just wasn't good enough for us to do what we wanted to do."

Instead, his team has spent the last two and a half year travelling the globe painstakingly recording the sounds of every...

Video: Sony Goes Behind the Wheel of Driveclub PS4 on PlayStation 4

50°
10w ago - Sony Social Media Specialist Justin Massongill went behind the wheel today in a PS4 video showcasing Driveclub on PlayStation 4 below!

To quote: Driveclub is a game PlayStation fans are likely already pretty familiar with. Originally slated as a PS4 launch title, the socially connected racer has shifted to an October 7th, 2014 release date.

But aspiring drivers needn't fear: the developers at Evolution Studios are making good use of this extra time.

We interview Paul Rustchynsky, Game Director of Driveclub at Judge's Day 2014.

The team at Evolution have been busy ensuring the connected aspects of Driveclub and its interface - dubbed the "dynamic menu" by game director Paul Rustchynsky - are seamlessly integrated into the game.

These, in tandem with a companion app launching alongside the game in October, are what will allow Driveclub to realize Evolution's vision of a truly social racing title.

Having played an earlier incarnation of Driveclub as well as its newest build, I'm in a unique position to be able to see what other differences a few months can make firsthand.

The most immediately apparent upgrade I noticed is in the graphical department. Driveclub...
