We're all waiting for the new Dual Shock 3 controller to be (shock!) unveiled at this week's Tokyo Game Show. But after a little digging, we've uncovered info suggesting that Sony isn't limiting itself to mere rumbling. It has bigger ideas to work on.
Thanks to the wonderful public database of the United States Patent and Trademark Office, we've located an intriguing document filed by Sony back in September 2006. Buried within the interminable bureaucratic wordage are two high-potential projects: Voice-active consoles and pressure-sensitive buttons.
Voice-active consoles? The intention seems to be to use microphones housed on a console with voice-recognition software, for actions like analysing your voice to match you with a game's character, or recalling your personal config settings at the sound of your voice. There's even a suggestion that noise-making gizmos could be packaged in cereal boxes, with the specif... More »
According to the source (linked above) they have seen an unedited copy of the initial FCC filing for Sony's much talked about new PS3 SKU. It is rumored that the new PS3 uses less power than previous models, the new PS3 will include a brand new controller (Dual Shock 3), the WiFi and Bluetooth parts have an upgrade to enable greater reach and lastly the inclusion of a 65nm chipset. To quote:
But after reading the report a few days ago, I have more details to report on the new PlayStation 3, as I’ve obtained an un-edited copy of the initial FCC (Federal Communication Commission) report (below with the original 60GB version of the PS3). Here are the things to note that’s not in the previous reports on this topic:
1.) The new PS3 model uses less power than the other models. This one uses 3A (Power Measurement), while the older version use 3.3A and 3.2A respectively.
2.) The new PS3 will include a brand-new controller, most likely the rece... More »

"Document sans nom," the title reads in French. A single bloody feather falls onto a vacant white backdrop. The calligraphy reads "Nothing is true. Everything is permitted." Flashes of molecular diagrams fill the page momentarily. November 14, 2007. Be prepared.
These are the words left from the haunting email sent out by Ubisoft Montreal today. The email, picture below, contained a single bloody feather with almost no indication of what the forthcoming surprise is aside from "another" coming soon. I've been looking forward to Assassin's Creed for a long time, and I'm hoping that this final surprise will shed some light on the genetic memory mystery that has remained the talk of the town.

Update: Following arguments, referee Judge Tunis has until December 21st to issue a ruling. Extensions are possible, however, so the end result could come even later than that date.
Controversial Miami attorney Jack Thompson faces the start of an ethics trial this morning which could see him disbarred.
The Florida Bar is pursuing several complaints concerning Thompson’s professional conduct in court cases against the video game industry.
As reported by GamePolitics, Thompson’s bid to block the trial failed last week when U.S. District Court Judge Adalberto Jordan dismissed his suit against the Florida Bar and Judge Dava Tunis, the referee appointed by the Florida Supreme Court to preside over the case.
Thompson’s attempt to add myself and the Entertainment Consumers Association (ECA) as co-defendants in that federal suit also failed.
Over the weekend, Thompson turned to the Florida Supreme Court in an apparen... More »
Nasa has released details of its strategy for sending a human crew to Mars within the next few decades.
The US space agency envisages despatching a "minimal" crew on a 30-month round trip to the Red Planet in a 400,000kg (880,000lb) spacecraft.
Details of the concept were outlined at a meeting in Houston, Texas.
In January 2004, President George W Bush launched a programme for returning humans to the Moon by 2020 and - at an undetermined date - to Mars.
The "Mars ship" would be assembled in low-Earth orbit using three to four Ares V rockets - the new heavy-lift launch vehicle that Nasa has been developing.
Notionally despatched in February 2031, the mission's journey from Earth to Mars would take six to seven months in a spacecraft powered by an advanced cryogenic fuel propulsion system.
Estimates of the cost of mounting a manned Mars mission vary enormously, from $20bn to $450bn.
