Sony Confirms DC Universe PS3 Discs Locked to Single Account

700°
166w ago - Update: Dutch site PS3Clan.nl has now confirmed that it is indeed possible to share your DC Universe Online PS3 disc with a friend and play the game for free, noting simply that both users will need to pay the subscription fee.

While not as bad as previous rumors, today LazyGamer.net (linked above) reports that Sony has confirmed DC Universe Online PS3 discs are locked to a single PSN account connected to their first player.

Essentially what this means is when you buy and play DC Universe Online, your PSN account will be automatically tied with that specific PlayStation 3 game disc.

If other PSN accounts try to play the game using that disc, they will be denied. Only you, the first player, will be able to play it.

To quote: "We discovered that DC Universe becomes linked to your account when you activate it, destroying your ability to sell it, trade it or rent it.

The folks at SOE were very quick to respond to our enquiry, and they had the following to say:

"Once the PSN key has been consumed with a disk it cannot be resold/replayed with the second user adding...

Sony is Developing New Laser Technology Far Superior to Blu-ray

500°
195w ago - While it may not be used for the PlayStation 4 which may utilize optical storage discs, Sony is currently developing new laser technology that is reportedly far superior to conventional Blu-ray discs.

According to Examiner.com (linked above), the new Sony laser tech is said to offer roughly 20 times the capacity of current Blu-Ray discs.

To quote: "The development team of Tohoku University and Sony has completed work on a new laser technology offering 20 times the capacity of current Blu-Ray discs.

The most difficult aspect, if I can make sense of the Google translation as well as I think I can, was reducing the size of the equipment needed to produce such a strong beam of light down to the size of commercial products.

Currently the technology can only be used in experimental prototypes costing over $100,000 to produce. Sony plans to have the laser available to consumers within a few years."

PS3 Not Compatible with New BDXL Spec 128GB Blu-ray Discs?

850°
211w ago - This weekend Engadget (linked above) reported that unlike going 3D this summer, Sony's PS3 entertainment system won't be able to read the upcoming 128GB BDXL Spec Blu-ray discs with just a PlayStation 3 Firmware update... a new player will likely be required.

To quote: "The Blu-ray Disc Association's rolling out a new BDXL format capable of holding up to 128GB (write-once) or 100GB (rewriteable).

Before you get too excited, you should know that you'll need a new player to access these - even a firmware update won't save the PS3 this time - since they go up to three or four layers deep and will likely need a more powerful laser."

Press Release: Blu-ray Disc Association Announces Additional Format Enhancements

LOS ANGELES (Business Wire) Apr 03, 2010 The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) today announced two new media specifications that use Blu-ray Disc technology to provide targeted functionality for commercial and consumer applications. The BDXL specification, which is targeted primarily at commercial segments such as...

Rumor: Sony PS4 to Use Optical Storage Discs Like Blu-ray on PS3

650°
222w ago - Sony's Senior VP of Product Development Shuhei Yoshida at SCEA has hinted in a recent interview with German site VideoGamesZone.de that PS4 may use optical storage discs like the Blu-ray discs the PlayStation 3 currently utilizes.

To quote from the interview, roughly translated: "Whether Shuhei Yoshida believes that the technology of digital distribution even when stationary consoles like the PlayStation 3 or a future 'PlayStation 4 prevails, "we wanted to know about him:" I think that digital content easier to portable devices like the PSP or the iPod fits.

It's faster, easier and more convenient than a CD, and the volumes of data keep both in music and play in bounds, "replies the Senior Vice President of Product Development at SCEA in discussion with video games area.

For home consoles, where the game files 5 to 30 gigabytes in size, was a download, however no longer feasible. Disc-based media would play on the console market is a part.

"Game developers now have to use the entire capacity of a Blu-ray Disc. But we supplement the offer with smaller titles from the PlayStation Store, but the big blockbuster games will continue to appear...
