* Finished the english documentation on how to colorize your games!

* The file list can now display up to 1024 roms.
* Added a small debug mode for the kernel version (copy the EBOOT from the Kernel mode directory to your MasterBoy directory on the PSP - this version runs significantly slower, so use it only for debugging and colorization). For people who reported ... More »

The PlayStation is a 32-bit video game console of the fifth generation. It was first released by Sony Computer Entertainment in December 1994.

The original PlayStation was the first of the ubiquitous PlayStation series of console and hand-held game devices, which has included successor consoles and upgrades including the Net Yaroze (a special black PS with tools and instructions to program PS games and applications), PS one (a smaller version of the original), PocketStation (a handheld which enhances PS games and acts as a memory card), PlayStation 2, a revised, slimline PS2, PlayStation Portable (a handheld gaming console), PSX (Japan only) (a media center, DVR and DVD recorder based on the PS2), and PlayStation 3. By March 31, 2005, the PlayStation and PS one had shipped a combined total of 102.49 million units, becoming the first video game console to ever reach the 100 million mark.

We at PS3News.com asked Santa for a PS3 Test, and he delivered, albeit a bit late.

It is a special unit, it runs unsigned code, and can do loads of debugging.

Just today we have learned alot, including the Blu-Ray drives transparent encryption, and even dumped a majority of the flash and HDD from inside the unit (Unencrypted!)

More to come!

Another brief update based on the yesterday's findings: the PS3 Flash is quite accessible as the majority of it is mounted inside the PS3 as a filesystem (think PSP), and is able to be read/written.

A picture is below for a peek at a partial filelist. As you can see there are quite a few sprx's. These are encrypted of course, however they function quite the same as their PSP counterparts. For the majority of the PS3 OS's functions, there is a sprx that is tasked to do the job.

For the big chunk of interesting news: Every single scene release ever released for PS3 will not work without being patched.

Why? It is because backup PS3 images lack some data that we will call a key. On an original, when the disc is inserted, the PS3 reads the key, and it is used to decrypt any encrypted files on disc (the DISC layer of encryption). On a backup, the PS3 can not read this key so it will not be able to decrypt the file. Of course if a hardware mod surface... More »

We have been revisiting the aspects of the Blu-Ray disc encryption today. As we know every executable is encrypted, and those executables that are placed on game discs are encrypted once more.

This second layer of encryption can be quite the bother, as it hinders our efforts to explore the console. So we have created a tool that runs on Dev machines that automatically dumps the main encrypted file (EBOOT.BIN) to a PC, or Memory Card.

The PS3News.com EBOOT.BIN dumper may be publically released in coming days, it is ready to go and is installable as a PKG, however it will only work on a Debug/Tool console!

This file is void of the Disc Based layer encryption, it is just a SELF. The SELF is encrypted as well, however we are much more familiar with the SELF file format, than with the randomness of an EBOOT.BIN.

Below is a picture of the utility, as well as screenshots of the following files, in their SELF form. The files were taken from... More »

We have been receiving some questions from the curious such as "What does the PS3's Hard Disk Filesystem look like?"

Below is a file list off the hard disk, although some directories are still inaccessible, we would like to share them with you.

The BCUS98107 entry is that of Resistance: Fall of Man, and its files are cache files copied to the HDD. Also, there is a pic of the debug controller lit up below.

We get our first hands-on with the PS3 version of Capcom's snowy shooter--more than a year after its initial Xbox 360 launch. But how different are the two versions really?

Capcom's Lost Planet: Extreme Condition has only been around a little while, but it has already jumped through its fair share of hoops. It first made its debut on Microsoft's Xbox 360 console last year before being catapulted over to the PC, where it subsequently became the poster boy for DirectX 10 graphics. Now, more than a year after hitting shelves (and even longer since its initial December 2006 launch in Japan), the game will make an appearance on Sony's PlayStation 3.

For those that missed the game in either its first or second coming, Lost Planet is a third-person shooter which revolves around the struggle for energy between humans and a hostile alien race called the Akrid. After colonizing E.D.N III and being met with resistance from the local wildlife, rather than try somewhere ... More »

We at PS3News got yet another great, although belated gift recently. Welcome the new PS3 Test to the family!

We received it the other day and since this is an actual TEST unit, versus a prototype (which is what I have), we decided to show off a few pictures below!

With the additional TEST unit, we now have (2) development PS3's to work with. It will help work progress much more efficiently as the resident PS3 Devs will be able to offload work onto the other unit now too.

In related news, we have been able to get additional retail back-ups running on the TEST PS3, which squashes initial concerns that the current method may not work for all titles.. nice news indeed!

Furthermore, soon we will be launching a scene-wide BETA of a collaborative PS3 Dev project that has been in the works for awhile now. All individuals/sites are encouraged to participate so that the PS3's full potential can be unlocked- more very soon, it will be impress... More »
