It’s just something that I have noticed occurring behind the scenes over the last year that I think is worthy of bringing up, as it indicates a growing faith in the PlayStation 3 console from developers and publishers across the globe. It does not mean that the Xbox 360 is any less important, just that the PS3 is definitely starting to get equal-footing on multi-format games.
Go back six months and more, almost every game that was multi-format was given to journalists on Xbox 360. Code came in for Xbox 360 debuggers (the devices on which we play unfinished games), promo copies were for the Xbox 360 and almost always games were demoed to us on Microsoft’s console when out at junkets across the world. It’s just the way it was.
Obviously being a multi-format publication, we actively chased PS3 versions of these games but they were rarely forthcoming, and if they did make it in, it could be months later. I sit alongside both the editor of Australian 360 Mag... More »
According to a report from Japan's Nikkei business daily via Reuters, Nintendo is planning to launch an updated Nintendo DS model by the end of 2008. Among other options, the new model is expected to feature a built-in camera along with support for the playback of music files.
To quote: Japanese video game maker Nintendo Co Ltd plans to launch a new model of its DS handheld machine that can take pictures and play music by the end of the year, the Nikkei business daily said on Sunday.
The move would pit the top-selling portable game gear with Apple Inc iPod and camera-embedded cellphones in general.
The price for the new machine, which will also be equipped with advanced wireless communications functions, is expected to be below 20,000 yen ($189) in Japan, compared with 16,800 yen for the current model, the Nikkei said.
The Wii game console and DS have been Nintendo's twin growth engines, helping its share price to grow more than thr... More »
At a recent event held in Delhi, Microsoft revealed some very interesting pieces of information.
For one thing, most sites have posted conspiracies and possible shots of what appeared as the console’s slim version; Engadget received a tip as far back as May concerning the planned 45nm Valhalla combined CPU / GPU motherboard design for the 360 and how it would most likely come in a new slim case.
MS execs here confirmed that the Xbox 360 Slim exists and you can expect an official announcement on the console in December.
When the redesign will be officially available (in 2009) to consumers is uncertain but this certainly looks to be a worthy purchase to start the New Year, especially with the upcoming October releases of Fallout 3, Fable 2 and Gears of War 2 in India.

The UK's daily mail is relighting the fire once again with a report that computer game degrees are useless, with employers arguing that they do not equip students with the basic maths, art and animation skills needed for a career in the business.
Jamie MacDonald, the vice-president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios Europe, said: ‘I can’t remember the last time I employed someone from them.’
To quote: But Skillset, the body that represents the ‘creative media’ industry, has only approved four courses as fully meeting employers’ needs.

A file that takes four minutes to download in South Korea would take nearly an hour and a half to download in the U.S. using the average bandwidth. Japanese users leaves U.S. users behind with an eye-popping 63.60 Mb/s download link.
This means that Japanese can download an entire movie in just two minutes, as opposed to two hours or more here in the U.S. Just in case you are wondering: No, Japanese users do not pay more for their broadband connections. In fact, U.S. broadband cost is among the highest in the world.
Japan dominates international broadband speed with a median download speed of approximately 63 Mb/s, more than enough to stream DVD-quality video with surround audio in real time. Next on the list is South Korea where download speeds achieve an average of 49.50 Mb/s.
Finland and France follow with 21.70 Mb/s and 17.60 Mb/s, respectively. Canada ranked eighth with an average download speed of 7.60 Mb/s. The U.S. came in 15th with 2.35... More »
Daily video blog Rocketboom has handed over its distribution and ad sales to Sony Pictures in return for a seven figue guarantee plus a share of the revenues. Rocketboom will be distributed on Crackle as well as other Sony platforms including PS3, PSP and Bravia I-Link TVs.
To quote: Rocketboom founder Andrew Baron says he went with Sony because of Sony's distribution strengths and the deal allows him to maintain control of the business. (Whereas selling the business to another media buyer, such as WallStrip did to CBS a year ago for $5 million, would have required him to give up his baby).
The deal is structured as a distribution and advertising deal, and sounds like it could lead to a closer relationship or outright sale if things go well. But if they don't, Rocketboom would regain complete control of distribution and ad sales after the contract expires.

Nintendo Co Ltd’s (7974.OS: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) Wii game console once again outsold Sony Corp’s (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) PlayStation 3 in Japan in June, but its lead is fading, a game magazine publisher said.
Wii outsold the rival console by 1.7-to-1, making it the No1 game console for a seventh consecutive month, Enterbrain said, but that was well short of the 6-to-1 lead the Wii had in May.
The launch in June of Konami Corp’s (9766.T: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) highly anticipated ‘Metal Gear Solid 4’ for the PS3 helped stir demand for the Sony machine, the magazine said.
Nintendo sold 235,990 units of its Wii console in the five weeks ended June 29, while sales of the PS3 came to 139,494 units, Enterbrain said. Microsoft Corp’s (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) Xbox 360 trails the pack, with sales of 10,964 units.
Despite its strong performance in June, the ... More »
