The new Xbox 360 Dashboard OS update is coming soon and it is going to be one of the biggest changes to the Xbox 360 since the system hit the market.
It is going to include the first complete redesign of the Xbox interface called the NXE by all the cool kids. The New Xbox Experience (NXE) is going to be the best thing to hit the Xbox and it is going to completely redefine how we use it.
One of the niftiest things at Penny Arcade Expo 08 was seeing the new Xbox dashboard. Xbox Live's own Major Nelson showed it off. He made sure to stress that it is still a work in progress and that there was an army of programmers over in Redmond that were cranking out code and testing it as he gave the demo.
As a side note if you ever go to a game expo or press event and Major Nelson asks you not to film something in the presentation and you do it anyway and then go on and keep on filming after he notices you and calls you out and you don't stop it then y... More »

Stephen Attard, 18, was arrested and charged with first-degree robbery after police say he and a group of teenagers went on a crime spree in Nassau County.
Teenagers who police say went on a video-game-inspired late-night crime spree were arraigned Thursday after police say they mugged a man outside a New Hyde Park supermarket and menaced motorists in Garden City with a baseball bat, a crowbar and a broomstick.
The teens told detectives they were imitating the Grand Theft Auto video game series where players steal cars, beat up other characters and score points for committing crimes.
Police have identified at least three victims: a man they said was severely beaten and had his teeth knocked out during a robbery; a would-be carjacking victim who called 911; and a driver whose van was smashed with a bat.
Nassau Det. Lt. Raymond Coté said there are likely more victims who were attacked. At one point during the spree, the group e... More »

Google engineers have adapted a software programme to help track child sex predators and search for patterns in images of abuse on the web.
Google created the technology for the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).
It was originally developed to block copyrighted videos on the company's YouTube division.
The programme uses pattern recognition to enable analysts to sort and identify files containing child sex abuse.
Google says its aim in teaming up with the centre's Technology Coalition Against Child Pornography is to develop solutions that would make it harder for people to use the web to exploit children or traffic in child pornography.
"You always hope that your work will eventually be used to do some good in the world, and this was an amazing chance to make that hope real," said Google research scientist Shumeet Baluja.

Police in New Zealand have questioned a teenager believed to be the ringleader of an international cyber-crime group.
The group is alleged to have infiltrated more than one million computers and skimmed millions of dollars from people's bank accounts.
The teenager, who is 18, cannot be named for legal reasons but was known by an alias as "Akill".
He was detained as part of an FBI crackdown on hi-tech criminals who run botnets - networks of hijacked PCs.
Global crackdown
After being questioned "Akill" was released without charge, but police say he is still being investigated.
Police allege that he was responsible for setting up a global network of hijacked PCs - known as a botnet.
The term describes the process of installing malicious software on PCs around the world to collect information such as login names, bank account details and credit card numbers.
The FBI estimates that 1.3 mi... More »
The ESRB: they decide what we should and should not play. Their initial verdict on Manhunt 2 was that it warranted an Adults Only rating. The UK decided to not allow the game at all. Rather than simply shelve the project, Rockstar toned down the game's content and resubmitted it to the ESRB, at which point the game managed to slide back down to a Mature rating.
In some people's eyes, forcing Rockstar to alter the game may seem like something done for the greater good. Less virtual violence will prevent any real life incidents, right? But in reality, it's part of an ongoing effort to limit video game developers' freedom.
There is a reason for the ESRB ratings. A 10-year old kid can't go into a store and purchase Grand Theft Auto. Sure, there have been slip-ups here and there by employees, but the rule is set in stone. Despite this, numerous individuals fight to take away violence and sex in video games. It's a parent's job to know what their kid is playing, s... More »
