After the secret source code for its then-unreleased shooter Half Life 2 showed up on file sharing services in 2003, game-maker Valve Software cooked up an elaborate ruse with the FBI targeting the German hacker suspected in the leak, even setting up a fake job interview in an effort to lure him to the United States for arrest.
The gambit ultimately failed, and Axel "Ago" Gembe remained safely in Germany. He was indicted last month in Los Angeles on new charges of creating the Agobot malware, and sharing it with a crew of U.S. hackers who used it to stage denial-of-service attacks in 2003.
In September 2003, the source code for the much-anticipated Half Life 2 game turned up online, and Valve's managing director, Gabe Newell, revealed that the company's network had been breached. In a post to the company's Web forum, Newell asked for gamer's assistance in finding the hackers responsible.

What's the point? SecuROM is there to make sure that you own the original CD for whatever it is protecting, but to put it in free trials downloaded off the Internet.. really what's the point?
Especially when you don't include that in the EULA. Read more at Slashdot and GamesPolitics.
I’ve said it time and time again, video game storylines suck. But that doesn’t mean that the character’s in those horrible storylines can’t come up with pearls of wisdom (Or is it just comic gold?) when they open up their mouths.
Below are, in my opinion, the ten greatest phrases to ever come out of a video game character’s mouth. I’m sure I’m missing a few here, but that’s what comment boards are for. So here they are, the top ten phrases ever.
See if you can close your eyes and remember just how they sounded the first time you first heard them. Just don’t do it while you’re driving or operating heavy machinery. You should usually keep your eyes open for stuff like that.
10. “Waka Waka Waka, etc.” —Pac-man
Fauzy from the Muppet Babies, is that you? Nope, it’s just everybody’s favorite yellow one-third-of-a-pizza chomping down on pellets while avoiding ghosts, or Klan members, or whatever, Inky, Blinky... More »
In addition to today's earlier LittleBigPlanet DLC announcement, Associate Producer Eric Fong has confirmed that it will continue to add to the LittleBigPlanet experience by bringing out new levels, costumes, materials and a variety of other content.
To quote:
GamePro: Will Media Molecule continue to release new levels?
Eric Fong: Yes, Media Molecule is continuing to add to the player experience with new levels, costumes, materials, and a host of other content.
How will you ensure that players find the best user-created levels?
There is a slew of metrics we monitor to help point players in the right direction, including how many people have "Hearted" a level and/or creator, how often a level is played, user comments, "tagging" etc. The cream will literally rise to the top as popular levels take up more real... More »
One lucky Gran Turismo fan recently had a chance to actually talk to Gran Turismo series creator Kazunori Yamauchi about all things Gran Turismo. Of course, one of the things that came up was Gran Turismo 5's release date.
When told about fans expecting the game to be released in 2010, Yamauchi laughed it off and said that the game will be released sooner than expected. As vague as ever, but it does raise hopes of a possible 2009 release.
Yamauchi also gave out a few more details about the game, including the current status of damage implementation. Apparently, some companies like Porsche (apparently, their contracts with other game makers have ended so Polyphony Digital is negotiating with them) have already given Polyphony Digital the go signal to total their cars, but other manufacturers (Yamauchi mentioned Ferrari) are being stubborn about it, even for minor side mirror damage stuff.
Yamauchi also confirmed that the "rubber band effect"... More »

Chris Stead: We’ve played the first Act of Gears of War 2 – everything is bigger, meaner and prettier. Does it all come down to the middleware?
Cliff Bleszinski: I think it comes down to having an extraordinary team. It is a combination of that and having the best tools in the business that enable our designers to rapidly prototype. Lee Perry, our senior gameplay de... More »
