206w ago - Those who are looking to legally back-up their Blu-ray discs will soon be able to do so, without having to resort to SlySoft AnyDVD of course.

To quote: It was announced today that beginning next year, consumers will be given the ability to make one copy of any Blu-ray disc they buy, a move being forced on studios and content holders by the Advanced Access Content System License Administrator, who went up to the studio owners and said "Come to me, son of Jor-El! Kneel before AACSLA!"

Known as "managed copy," this requirement has been in the works for the Blu-ray format for quite awhile, but was just recently finalized. The order that managed copy be mandatory on Blu-ray discs means that virtually all BDs released after Q1 2010 will offer customers the ability to make a single full-resolution backup copy.

Don't start getting your pirated eBay accounts set up just yet though. Current-gen Blu-ray players don't have the ability to play managed copies, and ones that can aren't expected to hit the market until Q2 2010 at the earliest.

256w ago - I'm a huge PS3 fan, and (IMO) it's easily the best system. However, here are some things that I think Microsoft does better that I would like to see Sony imitate. This is intended to be lighthearted, so please make comments accordingly.

1. Timely Western Releases of Japanese Games.

There are great Japanese PS3 exclusives like Yakuza 3 that take forever to get released in the west. Yakuza 2 is taking at least two years. WTF! The game is done: the code, art, plot, game mechanics, everything is built, written, finished, and tested. Does it really take years and years to add some sub-titles? Of course, not.

There's absolutely no good reason for such a long holdup. Westerners love Japanese games. Even the smaller niche titles are important to the influential taste makers in the west. Microsoft knows that and has nipped this issue. There are no three year localization periods for Japanese developed 360 titles. Sony needs to do the same thing: Get on the phone, schedule some meetings, knock on some doors... make it happen.

2. Shift PS2 Developers to PS3.

Microsoft was smart. When the Xbox 360 was coming out, they moved all Xbox developers over to the new system very early. Obviously, PS2 is a little different in that it's more profitable and still very popular among...

267w ago - We know that a future PlayStation 3 firmware update will enable Portable Copy, a feature that will allow users to copy a downsampled version of certain Blu-ray titles over to their PSP for portable viewing.

But in a recent interview with Japanese site Impress Watch, Sony engineers revealed that an upcoming firmware update will also bring support for Managed Copy.

With Managed Copy, PS3 owners will be able to pop-in a Blu-ray disc and legally rip it straight to their PS3's hard drive. Additionally, future updates are expected to bring 1080 deinterlacing and DTS-HD MA support to the console. A release window for the new features was not given.

On the subject of Firmware 2.20, one of the engineers said that the forthcoming update will greatly reduce system memory usage.

Without a doubt, this is great news for developers and likely means that Sony is paving the way for in-game XMB.

269w ago - Despite media reports to the contrary, Sony has officially confirmed that the much-touted Portable Copy feature will NOT be included in the upcoming Firmware 2.20 update for PS3.

Not entirely unexpected, considering the original press release made no such mention of the feature.
