73w ago - Following up on the PS Vita HBL Demo, today PlayStation Vita hacker wololo has shared details on the PS Vita Content Manager and the related security concerns as outlined below.

To quote: A few days ago I posted my concerns about the “Content Manager” tool, a tool that is compulsory to install and use if you want to copy files from and to your vita. Some people said I was paranoid (see my answer to that at the end of the article), and others shared my concerns and started digging. Interestingly enough, that article gathered almost as much attention as my much more spectacular (in my opinion) video of a Megadrive emulator running on the vita.

162w ago - Despite some refunds being granted, today Sony UK has officially apologized for the OtherOS removal in the recently released PS3 Firmware 3.21 update citing PS3 piracy concerns as the underlying factor.

To quote from Sony's official statement to Thinq.co.uk (linked above):

"We are sorry if users of Linux or other operating systems are disappointed by our decision to issue a firmware upgrade which when installed disables this operating system feature.

We have made the decision to protect the integrity of the console and whilst mindful of the impact on Linux or other operating system users we nevertheless felt it would be in the best interests of the majority of users to pursue this course of action.

As you will be aware we have upgraded and enhanced functionality and features of the console by numerous firmware upgrades over time and this is a very rare instance...

198w ago - This past weekend iD Software followed up on previous reports that at this stage in development the Xbox 360 version of Rage runs faster than the PlayStation 3 build.

New details have surfaced, indicating PS3 owners should have nothing to worry about when the game is eventually released.

To quote: "We are committed to ensuring that gamers on all platforms have a great RAGE experience," developer id said of the "ruckus" in a Twitter update.

No word yet on when Rage will hit PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and Mac, but 2010 looks likely.

221w ago - While the PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers were enjoying the long awaited release of Street Fighter IV, the PC gaming community fell victim to Capcom's anti-piracy strategy.

Capcom believes they can reduce piracy on the PC by releasing the PC version of the game months after the console. This policy has failed as it would seem.

Entering "Street Fighter IV" into a torrent search engine results in numerous images of the 360's Street Fighter IV disc with thousands of downloads already completed. To add insult to injury, some of these copies went up online before the game's launch date!

Even though the anti-piracy tactic has failed, it seems like PC gamers must endure the wait a little while longer. If Best Buy's Pre Order page is correct that wait ends May 15th. For Capcom's sake they better hope that the hype of the game lasts till that point.

I for one am interested. I wonder if they high piracy rate of the XBox 360 version of the game will result in a change in Capcom's policy on piracy? It should be obvious to them now that their piracy concerns should extend beyond the PC versions of their games.

Beyond all the piracy the game seem to be selling very well. On the first day of its release it was sold out in Japan. In the USA the Collectors edition of the game was...

242w ago - Chris Cao, Creative Director at SOE-Austin, has said that they want DC Universe Online to allow PS3-PC cross-platform play. Chris added that the problem is that when it comes to updating them it is much more troublesome when updating through the PlayStation Network.

To quote: He explained that with PCs, it's easy to have players download enormous files, whereas on consoles, there are different requirements as to how much space the file can take.

Cao also said it was partly a production process issue. To allow for cross-platform play, the company has to make sure to get updates out for both platforms simultaneously.

"We don't want the console guys to get [updates] earlier or later or either way," he said. "And since they're two such different systems, we really need to work on our side to make sure that [simultaneous updates] happen.

But I think if anybody is going to do it and make it simultaneously seamless for people, it's going to be us. It's just that we haven't done it yet, so we don't like to promise what we haven't delivered yet."
