550°
298w ago - Today mx24 dropped us an e-mail to let us know of a new PS3 modification he has posted at Spanish Web site Elotrolado (linked above).

In summary, he has added a SMA connector to his Sony PlayStation 3 console and as a result he was able to increase the WiFi signal from 20% to 52%.. over a 25% jump!

Below is a picture of the finished PS3 External WiFi Antenna Mod, and also 'before' and 'after' pics of the Internet Connection screens.

To quote in part, roughly translated: Good, after several days of work and investigation, I have been able to replace one of the internal antennas wifi of ps3 (ANT0-WLAN) by 9 an external antenna of dbi, connected through connecting SMA, implanted in the back part of the console.

To comment that once with the materials in my power, and with the clear things on the way to act, this mod has not taken to me but of 30 minutes. Including the disassembling, implantation of the connector and final assembly of the machine.

We begin by the necessary materials:

1. a PS3 with board Wifi, that is to say, that our black has Wifi connection.

2. a Pigtail UFL to SMA female of 30 cm. (Between 10 and 15 Euros)

3. an antenna with male connection SMA; it has of all the powers, from 5 dbi to 50. (from 5 Euros)

Sony Anticipates PlayStation Home to Boost PlayStation 3 Sales

314w ago - Kaz Hirai has indicated that he expects PlayStation Home to boost sales of the PS3 this Holiday period. Moreover, he added that he expects the gaming division of Sony to be less affected by the current adverse economic conditions.

To quote: A Sony Corp. executive told the Wall Street Journal this month that the company expects the new online universe 'Home' to boost sales of the Playstation 3 this holiday.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Chairman and Group CEO Kaz Hirai told the publication that Home, which will allow PS3 owners to mingle in a virtual world, will be available by the end of the year.

Hirai added that he expects the company's game unit to be less affected by current economic conditions.

Sony in Sept. 2007 delayed the Home online service to spring 2008. It subsequently delayed the project to the end of the year.

Sony will sell a new 160GB PS3 bundle in Nov. next to the current 80GB SKU.

Sony prepares 5x boost to hard drive storage with new technology

50°
346w ago - Sony has revealed a new type of technology that will will allow it to make larger hard drives possible even with notebooks.

Instead of using a traditional magnetic read/write head, the new development utilizes a hybrid of magnetic optical technology to increase the density. Therfore, a full terabit can fit on a single square inch, which is five times the space of a traditional drive.

To quote: Sony has revealed a new technology it says will make large hard drives possible even with notebooks. Rather than use a traditional magnetic read/write head, the new development uses a hybrid of magnetic and optical technology to greatly increase the density: while the storage itself is similar, media is written to disk using a laser.

The extremely small, precise nature allows it to fit far more bits of data on any given area. A full terabit (125GB) can fit on a single square inch -- five times the space of conventional hard disks, Sony says.

The gain should result in notebook hard disks that store as much as 150 hours of HD-grade video and would translate to a 1.6TB hard drive using the same design as today's 320GB hard disks. Sony itself has no immediate plans to produce the hard drives and has no timetable, but says it will work with hard drive manufacturers to introduce shipping products...
