The new PCSX2 plays PS2 games close to full speed and now supports online play! The authors and beta testers have successfully played Monster Hunter online on the official servers with people playing on real PS2s. Keyboard support was then added for chatting.

There is no release with these features yet and please do not bug the authors about one. You can however play with the latest released version.

Show us one person who's not yet excited about Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, and we'll shamelessly assume he or she is someone with a middling PC waiting for the console versions. For everyone else, Activision is giving us an early taste of the title with the release of a demo today.

The 728 MB demo (available now via FileFront) gives players access to a full map (Valley) from the beta. If you happened to be in the beta and are already familiar with this map, it may still be worth checking out, as Splash Damage promises that it has undergone further balancing since then. This war zone is playable in both online and offline form with bots. For the best strategies in taking your skills online, be sure to read the official guide to Valley from the Quake Wars community site.

In addition to the demo, the team has also released finalized system requirements, so check t... More »

With the recent rash of demos popping up on the PlayStation Network, we were shocked to not see a small demo available for Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA)'s Warhawk. Rather than speculate, we asked Sony whether the company might release the demo to gamers who are considering purchasing the product.

Here's how an official rep for SCEA replied to GameDaily BIZ's query: "Warhawk was designed to support up to 32-players online simultaneously. In a demo version of a multiplayer only game, there is little control over how many players will be on a dedicated server at a time, potentially leading to smaller online battles that do not fully do justice to the title's fast combat and frantic play. Additionally, Warhawk development underwent an extensive beta trial that included nearly 10,000 participants, which offered a wide audience ample opportunity to experience the game and provide valuable feedback to during Warhawk's development."

    So don't expect a Warh... More »

Sony has been working hard to make sure everything in Home, its PS3 online network of public lobbies and private spaces, is exactly where it should be. And its also been busy preventing the majority of Beta testers from blabbing about the service.

However, a few naughty testers have been snapping screenshots, recording videos and posting their results on the internet for all to see. So, thanks to them, we can now show you just how well the newest version of Home is shaping up.

Check out the shots of Sony's new pad in the gallery.

Last night a gaggle of old-school Team Fortress Classic fans flocked to Steam for their first shot at playing Team Fortress 2, a "beta" only available to those who have pre-ordered The Orange Box through Valve's download service. Unfortunately, as tends to happen with these anticipated downloads, there were some hiccups in the process.

The problem began early when Team Fortress 2 became the first Orange Box game available for download. The rush to Valve's servers was unprecedented, meaning that many excited gamers got a disappointing "Our servers are currently too full" message when trying to pre-load the game. Further issues throughout the night were dutifully chronicled by ShackNews.

At one point well past midnight for most eagerly awaiting players, Valve's Erik Johnson stopped into the ShackNews chatroom to leave this update on the source of the delay:

"We're really close, just a few issues with the Linux server. We just released the Win32 s... More »

The first noticeable difference with the Tokyo Game Show build was the addition of a new display to house and showcase your and others' created games: a globe. All of the levels that you, your friends, or random others create appear as little patches on a big world. Although it wasn't visible in the TGS version of the game, the idea is that your world will eventually fill with patches -- some through your own doing, sure, but mainly by being populated via the network.

To help promote the game's viral nature, your world will fill up with some of the best or most popular levels from others -- but you can also apply all sorts of filters, such as to display only levels from friends, or levels above or below a certain rating, and so on. Also not implemented in the TGS version, you'll be able to zoom in and out of the globe, so as it fills with hundreds (perhaps thousands?) of levels you'll still be able to navigate through them.

Interestingly, the developers hope... More »
