It appears the in-game advertisements really aided Barack Obama in becoming the next President of the United States of America.

To help celebrate his new found role, a level has been created in LittleBigPlanet by Richard Windsor of Aeropause.com.

Sony's semi-official blog ThreeSpeech has posted an article that asks AI coders from a number of studios "how close are we to creating truly autonomous AI characters" in games. To quote:

Part one: autonomy

To kick off, we’re looking at enemies who think for themselves. How close are we to creating truly autonomous AI characters, able to react in real-time to player actions and formulate their own responses? Some developers have been experimenting with techniques such as Goal-Orientated Action Planning (GOAP) for several years in order to create ‘thinking’ beings.

But is this desirable? And is there still a role for scripted AI, in which the baddies perform actions based on pre-programmed, pre-determined elements? We ask the makers of F.E.A.R, Prototype, Dead Space and Wheelman.

Participants:

Sergio Garces Casao, Lead AI Programmer, Prototype, Radical Entertainment
Chris Hecker: Independent game coder

2K Games has outlined its plans for the announced downloadable content coming to BioShock for the PlayStation 3.

On November 20, fans of splicing can pay $9.99 for three self-contained Challenge Rooms. The new rooms also offer PlayStation Trophies for clever solutions to the problems they present. The description of the rooms straight from 2K Games follows:

A Shocking Turn of Events - A Little Sister is trapped atop a Ferris wheel in an undisclosed location in Rapture. Using only the tools and environment around them, players must use their wits to create electricity to power the Ferris wheel and bring the Little Sister to safety.

The I in Team - Using limited resources, and an even more limited arsenal, players must negotiate traps and find a way to defeat a Big Daddy using their wits instead of raw firepower.

Worlds of Hurt - Step up and take on the most grueling challenge offered in the world of Rapture. Pl... More »

This generation console war is still finely in the balance. Sure, the Wii is way out in front, while the PS3 and Xbox 360 trade positions on a monthly basis, but with a long way to go, I still feel it’s anyone’s market.

So what will swing it for one of the consoles? What will make the all-important mainstream consumer choose one over the other and take it on to victory?

While some of us have owned and played a next generation console for two to three years, we are the early adopters, the hardcore gamers (except for Wii owners) who want the latest and greatest system to experience our hobby on. And generally, although price may be a slight concern, we’re willing to pay through the nose for that cutting-edge experience.

But with prices dropping and this generation of consoles moving in to the second phase, the general populous are entering the fray and choosing their games system to replace the last-gen console they have been happy with for t... More »

Even though Resident Evil 5 producer Juntake Uchi thinks the Wii is a “wonderful piece of hardware,” he also believes that “even the title screen of this [Resident Evil 5] couldn’t have been done on PS2 or Wii.”

In some ways, this is an insult to the hardware of the Wii, but it’s not exactly a hidden secret that Nintendo’s system is vastly underpowered when compared to the 360 and PS3.

To quote: Kawata: First of all, and quite obviously, the graphics. Even the title screen of this couldn't have been done on PS2 or Wii. Online co-op as well; the number of enemies you can have on-screen at one time; destructible scenery, physics - we're using Havok this time.

We can do more complex stuff with AI; the concern I had in the very beginning is that sometimes an AI partner can become very frustrating. Now she handles fine and you can play through the game without her becoming a frustration.

When you see the new stuff ... More »

1ra2 of PS3Gen (linked above) has discovered something quite interesting with the new PS3 Firmware 2.50. In the new firmware, a "hidden" Restore Menu has been added.

To access it, while the PS3 is in standby, hold the power button like you are doing a reset, but keep holding it down until there are two beeps, and you then can access it.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm always a fan of any hidden menu, be it in a TV, a PS3, or even a washing machine. However this is more for the technically inept. A video of it is below:

Lets go over the options available. For those who can not read French, from top to bottom:

1. Restart System
2. Restore Default Settings
3. Restore File System
4. Rebuild Database
5. Restore PS3 System
6. System Update

Restart System and System update are quite self explanatory, you can restart the system or upgrade the PS3's f... More »

According to Boston.com (linked above), advertisements for Barack Obama have appeared in nine EA video games, including Guitar Hero and Madden 09. The ads appear on billboards and other signage, and remind players that early voting has begun and plug a campaign Web site.

To quote: Too busy playing video games to watch presidential ads on television? Barack Obama has found you, too, by becoming the first presidential candidate to buy ad space inside a game.

Nine video games from Electronic Arts Inc., including the popular "Guitar Hero" and "Madden 09" football game, feature in-game ads from the Obama campaign.

The ads - they appear on billboards and other signage - remind players that early voting has begun and plug a campaign website.

Obama campaign officials said the video game ads target 10 states that allow early voting, including several battleground states: Ohio, Iowa, Indiana, Montana, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Nevada, N... More »

President Bush signed a new anti-piracy law heavily backed by the RIAA and MPAA today that establishes an IP Czar who will report directly to the president.

Primarily aimed at better protecting worldwide copyrights, the law boasts strengthening criminal laws against counterfeiting and piracy. The first IP Czar is expected to be named around the end of President Bush’s final term of office.

To quote: The law also toughens criminal laws against piracy and counterfeiting, although critics have argued that the measure goes too far and risks punishing people who have not infringed.

The Recording Industry Association of America and Motion Picture Association of America backed the bill, as did the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

"By becoming law, the PRO-IP Act sends the message to IP criminals everywhere that the U.S. will go the extra mile to protect American innovation," said Tom Donohue, president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Comm... More »
