16w ago - Today the previous PlayStation 3 rumors have been confirmed as a new flash-based 12GB PS3 console has been spotted on retailer shelves in both the US and Canada for $199.
Below are the details, to quote: "Following its release in Europe last year, the heavily rumored Flash-based PlayStation 3 is now on sale in the United States and Canada, The Verge has confirmed.
Sony's first low-storage model of the venerable console is now on shelves at Best Buy selling for $199.99. It's also available for sale at Canadian retailer Future Shop.
Sony had resisted selling a lower-capacity console in light of its emphasis on digital game and media downloads, even though Microsoft has always offered a low-storage Xbox 360. Both systems support adding additional storage through USB."
Finally, from Sony Hardware Associate Brand Marketing Manager Crystal MacKenzie:
At PlayStation, we want to provide the best place to play. That’s why today, we are pleased to announce the North American launch of our brand new PS3 12GB System for $199.99 (MSRP). This new 12GB system is the perfect way to play exclusive titles found only on PlayStation*, and to get access to the entertainment services offered through...
37w ago - Today an online Sony patent has surfaced that outlines a method to award PS3 Trophies based on disc access, possibly to be used with the upcoming PlayStation 4 / PS4 console as well.
Below are the details, as follows: Called "Method and Apparatus for awarding trophies", the patent explains a way to award trophies, even for games that don't natively support them...
"A method and apparatus for adding trophy support games that do not have trophies without modifying the original game," the patent states.
"The method and apparatus are used to detect particular disk access, use the detected disk access as potential trophy triggers in games, and recognize the triggers while a game is played. Trophies are awarded based on the triggers, and the awarded trophies are stored."
The diagram below also gives an idea of how it works:
"A method for assigning one or more trophies to a user, comprising: accessing media content; defining one or more trophies; defining a trigger associated with the media content; detecting the trigger during media content access; and assigning the one or more trophies to a user account that is associated with the...

203w ago - According to Capcom's VP of strategic planning and business development Christian Svensson, Capcom is working on a hardcore Project Natal game based on an old franchise.
Outside of tech demonstrations and modifications of several existing Xbox 360 games, we haven't seen what Project Natal is capable of.
Microsoft is keeping those games under wraps, however, G4TV caught up with him at CES last week and learned the following, to quote:
"I can't talk about what we're doing on Natal right now yet because we haven't announced it, although we have announced that we're working on stuff," said Svensson, emphasizing his vagueness.
He was willing to tease a little more about one unannounced game, however.
"I think you'll see again a brand focus on what we're doing there [on Natal], perhaps a brand we haven't seen in a while," he said with a coy smile, as Capcom public relations eyeballed us. "That's exciting."
Microsoft announced Project Natal would be released during the holidays at CES, but Svensson made it clear to me that Capcom was not rushing this one out the door to meet that deadline.
"We're not going to be at launch, just to temper the expectations," he said. "We're gonna cook something and it's gonna to take a while to cook."
