LG claims Sony is infringing four of its patents in a complaint that broadly relates to "certain electronic devices having a Blu-Ray Disc player and components thereof", but the PlayStation 3 (Model No. CECH-2501A) is the only Sony product to be specifically named in the main document of the complaint.

A [Register or Login to view links] reports suggests LG's claims are revenge for cases brought against it by Sony in December. Sony claims the Seoul-based company is infringing seven of its patents relating to LG phones. Sony has also filed a civil lawsuit against LG Blu-ray players.

Left 4 Dead 2 'Banned' in Australia, Refused Classification

400°
274w ago - While the Australian government dawdles on changes to the country's classification guidelines, games continue to be "refused classification" on the grounds they exceed the maximum rating of MA15+. The latest game on the chopping block? Left 4 Dead 2.

Yup, Valve's Zombie shooter has been refused classification, which means it can't be made commercially available in the country. Not quite the same as a banning, but it has the same effect.

To quote: We've contacted Valve for comment, and will update when/if we hear back. Previous games to have suffered this fate usually receive an MA15+ rating later down the line after edits have been made to the offending content.

Here's why it was "[Register or Login to view links]":

•The game contains violence that is high in impact and is therefore unsuitable for persons aged under 18 to play.

•It notes that this violence is "inflicted upon 'the Infected' who are living humans infected with a rabies-like virus that causes them to act violently."

•The report singles out the use of melee weapons as those that "inflict the most damage" and cause "copious amounts of blood spray and splatter (sic), decapitations and limb dismemberment......

Banned Gamer Alleges Sony Violated Free Speech & Stole Money

282w ago - A PlayStation 3 gamer has [Register or Login to view links] (PDF) in U.S. District Court in California, alleging that SCEA suppressed his free speech rights and caused him pain and suffering by banning his account on the PlayStation Network.

In a complaint filed on July 6th, Erik Estavillo of San Jose writes that he is disabled by a variety of disorders; among these are agoraphobia, a fear of crowds, to quote:

The pain and suffering was caused by the defendant, Sony, banning the plaintiff's account on the PlayStation 3 Network, in which the plaintiff relies on to socialize with other people, since it's the only way the plaintiff can truly socialize since he also suffers from Agoraphobia...

Estavillo's issues with SCEA apparently stem from his play of the PS3 hit Resistance: Fall of Man:

The ban is supposedly due to the behavior of the plaintiff when he plays the video game "Resistance: Fall of Man," which Sony owns and employs moderators for its online play. These moderators kick and ban players that they feel are deserving; though their biases to a player seem to be what determines the kick or ban...

The plaintiff was exercising his First Amendment Rights to Freedom of Speech in the game's public forum when he...

Prison Inmates' PlayStations Now Banned Due to Escape Fears

550°
287w ago - Just over a month ago it was rumored that crime lords were running empires from jail via PlayStation consoles.

Today it appears some prison officials are taking no chances, and are banning inmates' PlayStation 3 consoles amid escape fears.

To quote: A prison has banned inmates from using PlayStation 3 games consoles because they fear they could be used in an escape attempt.

Inmates at Rye Hill prison, near Rugby, Warwickshire, were found to be using the consoles' built-in wireless connections to chat to friends outside prison.

Wardens have confiscated the consoles over fears they pose a "significant threat" to prison security. A spokesman for the Prison Service said:

"PlayStation 3 consoles are barred on the grounds that they have the capability to send and receive radio signals as an integral part of the equipment."
