178w ago - Over the weekend JoyStiq revealed that Sony is limiting use of 1080p 3D in PS3 games while opting for 720p, and today both PC World (linked above) and Eurogamer explain why Sony mandates 720p for PS3 3D while admitting the PlayStation 3 can do 3D 1080p.
Sony's Simon Benson confirmed that the PS3 can do 3D gaming in 1080p, but developers are generally encouraged to keep PS3 3D games at 720p due to frame rates and related issues that may arise with 1080p in PlayStation 3 3D gaming.
To quote: "3D exacerbates the issue, requiring the system process two discrete interlaced images--one for each eye--to fake depth perception.
In an undated tech presentation by a Sony engineer, the engineer admits "rendering two images from the same hardware may require compromises or limit the possibilities," citing performance ("the scene must be rendered twice"), VRAM usage ("the frame buffer may be larger in some cases"), and resolution limits ("more pixels may be processed") as mitigating factors in the list of technical considerations."
According to Eurogamer, to quote: "Tt's simply the case that the new stereo 3D support built into the...
234w ago - Something appears to have gone a little wrong with Terminal Reality's PlayStation 3 Ghostbusters engine... the native rendering resolution of the game is a little shocking.
In previous interviews, the game developers at Terminal Reality had talked up their PlayStation 3 technology for their upcoming Ghostbusters game. In a conversation with VG247 Terminal Reality president Mark Randel said:
"Personally, I want to show off our PS3 technology. We're one of the few developers who love the PS3 and have a great time with it. We have great technology for the PS3 and we want to show it off.
"We're running the same game for both platforms but if we made a PS3-only game, for example, you could double the amount of objects on screen that you're seeing. The PlayStation 3 has seven processors and the 360 only has three, so seven versus three means you can do a lot more on the PS3. We're keeping the game the same over both platforms so we don't want to take out any features," Randel added.
Alarms were raised after a comparison published on Web site Lens of Truth. They...

292w ago - The eagerly awaited Gears of War 2 footage was released last night to the delight of fans and gamers. What we saw was some great looking action with far more happening on screen than Gears 1.
I was floored when I saw the down sampled video. Upon further inspection of the 720p feed though, it appears that Epic isn't rendering on screen what we might think. Check out these full 720p direct feed game captures. Jpgs are not compressed.
It appears that Epic has applied a strong smear filter to the engine. This smear effect is also similar to the median blur in Photoshop. Why is it there? Is it there for effect? Perhaps. But does it make the game look better? Maybe if you're using lower res textures and lower poly models. View the images and decide for yourself.
