At the same BMO Capital Markets' conference last week in New York where he gave an update on upcoming GTAIV DLC and Chinatown Wars, Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick offered a glimpse further down the road. In his "Negative Approach" blog for cnet, Dave Rosenberg related these remarks from Zelnick:

The Holy Grail is taking a business, already a very large and successful business that's focused on packaged goods... and turning that into a subscription business or a semi subscription business where we have an ongoing relationship with consumers, giving them products that they want. Who's better positioned to do that than the company that has the top franchises?

It isn't much of a stretch here to start connecting the dots. The Grand Theft series definitely fits the bill as a "successful business that's focused on packaged goods," and it's also the top of their franchise properties. And though delayed, the DLC plan for GTAIV offers an ideal test run for a "semi... More »

Dynasty Warriors and Romance of the Three Kingdoms series developer Koei is bringing their popular MMORPG, Uncharted Waters Online, to the PlayStation 3 in Japan during 2009.

According to Siliconera, the game is based off the Uncharted Waters series of games, the first of which was released on the Super NES in 1992.

This MMO sends players into the ocean, but not as pirates. Taking cues from history, Uncharted Waters is set in the Age of Discovery when Europe explored the seas- picking one of six nationalities, and one of the three basic classes in order to engage in trading, exploration and sea battles.

No information regarding pricing or subscription fees have been released at this time. Sadly, Uncharted Waters Online and its expansion (Cruz del Sur) are currently available only in Asia, so it seems unlikely this PS3 version would make it into the Western market.

According to Gamestop and a leaked Circuit City flier, the rumored 60GB HDD Live starter pack is really real and will be releasing next week.

The 60GB HDD Live pack includes a 60GB hard drive, a 3 month subscription to Xbox Live, a wired headset and ethernet cable all for $99.

Quite the steep price, but it works in terms of the console pricing between an Xbox 360 Arcade and Xbox 360 Pro.

But we're not justifying the price, and 100% agree that it's still way expensive.

Microsoft’s Xbox Live boasts an enormous user base, however, many of its users have been nothing short of vocal in criticizing the monthly subscription fee required to fully “jump in.”

Supporters of the service often cited the flexible in-game chat capability as its primary edge over the PlayStation Network, but recent updates on the part of Sony have bridged that gap.

The addition of online capabilities to consoles allowed gamers to remotely connect to each other, but more importantly, from a publishers perspective, it created a viable means for digital distribution of content. On that note, both the PS3 and 360 next-gen consoles have infrastructures capable of delivering digital content to consumers, but which format do publishers prefer?

In a recent interview, Capcom’s digital content product manager, John Diamonon, discussed the current digital distribution options available to publishers. Diamonon complimented the PSN service,... More »
